Key Details ✨

Duration: 6 hours
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Group size: Private (1–4 guests)
Guide: Fully qualified botanist
Transfers: Included (Malta & Gozo; ferry ticket not included)

What to Expect 🌿

The tour starts with pick-up from your accommodation, followed by a drive towards the south-eastern coastline. Once on the trail, the botanist leads you along established footpaths atop low coastal cliffs composed of globigerina limestone. This area is known for its erodible ochre-coloured rock layers, which have formed unusual shapes through natural erosion. You’ll walk through quiet agricultural zones, traditional dry-stone walls, and stretches of coast rich in native shrubs and coastal plants, including species unique to Malta.

As the route continues, you visit several bays, eroded formations, and scenic viewpoints, including Saint Peter’s Pool and the surrounding rocky platforms. Further along, the walk passes Marsaxlokk and its fishing community, where brightly coloured boats and traditional fish markets remain an important part of local life. There is time for a short coffee or snack break in Marsaskala (food and drinks at your own cost) before completing the circuit.

The botanist provides detailed explanations of coastal ecology, plant identification, soils, and the impact of erosion on the landscape. Historical sites such as Fort Delimara and the old salt pans are visited briefly, though the primary focus remains on nature and geology rather than historical interpretation. The tour ends with a return transfer to your accommodation.

Location 📍

The walk takes place along Malta’s south and south-eastern coastline between Marsaxlokk and Marsaskala. This region is characterised by low cliffs, terraced agricultural land, and coastline exposed to shaping forces such as wind, waves, and limestone erosion. The varied terrain provides excellent opportunities to observe endemic coastal species and long-term geological processes.

Fishing villages in this area retain traditional practices, with anchored boats, markets, and waterfront activity contributing to the local character. The route passes several natural formations and bays, offering good exposure to both coastal ecology and the island’s rural environment. Transfers ensure straightforward access regardless of where you are staying on Malta or Gozo.

Prerequisites ✔️

Guests should be comfortable completing an 8 km walk at a steady pace. The route is classed as easy, but the duration and exposure to sun or wind may feel demanding for those unused to longer outdoor activities. Proper footwear is essential; sandals and flip-flops are not suitable for the mixed limestone and dirt paths.

This tour is nature-focused. While the guide is knowledgeable about some historical features, the emphasis is on biodiversity, ecology, plant species, and the coastal environment. The experience is private, with a maximum of four participants to ensure a detailed and personalised outing.

This experience is led entirely by a certified botanist, giving you access to specialist insight that goes far beyond a typical sightseeing walk. With detailed explanations of plant communities, coastal formations, and the environmental features shaping the region, the tour is ideal for guests who value expert-led learning in the outdoors.

Operating as a private activity ensures time and space to ask questions, explore specific interests, and enjoy the walk at a comfortable pace. Veelgestelde vragen:

How difficult is the 8 km walk?

The walk is classed as easy because the terrain is mostly flat or gently undulating, with established coastal paths and farm tracks. There are no steep climbs or technical sections, so anyone with basic fitness can complete it comfortably. The main challenge is the duration rather than the terrain itself.
Guests should still expect uneven limestone surfaces, occasional loose stones, and some exposure to sun and wind along the cliffs. Regular breaks are included, making the pace manageable even for those who do not walk long distances regularly.

What will the botanist focus on during the tour?

The botanist leads the entire experience, offering expert explanations of Malta’s endemic plants, coastal shrubs, agricultural species, and the ecological factors that shape the south coast. You’ll learn how erosion, soil composition, and coastal weather patterns influence plant distribution.
Although the route includes some historic sites, the guide prioritises natural sciences rather than historical storytelling. You will receive context when passing features such as Fort Delimara or salt pans, but the main emphasis remains on biodiversity and the environment.

What should I wear for the walk?

Comfortable trekking shoes are essential because the route passes over limestone, dirt paths, and uneven coastal terrain. Footwear with good grip helps prevent slips on smooth rock surfaces, especially near eroded formations. Sandals and flip-flops are not advised.
Clothing should match the season. Lightweight, breathable layers work well in warmer months, while windproof outerwear may be needed in cooler weather. A small backpack for water, snacks, and sun protection is recommended.

How long is the full experience including transfers?

The experience lasts approximately six hours from pick-up to drop-off. This includes transfer time, walking time, breaks, and the stop in Marsaskala. The walking distance itself averages around 8 km and is spread comfortably across the day.
Guests staying in Gozo will have a slightly longer overall schedule due to the required ferry crossing. The botanist coordinates timing to ensure smooth travel and return.

Can guests bring their own food or drinks?

Yes, guests may bring water, snacks, or a packed lunch. Hydration is especially important during warmer months because some sections of the route have limited shade. The guide is accustomed to pacing breaks around guest needs.
There is also an optional stop at a snack bar in Marsaskala where guests may purchase drinks or light food. This stop is not included in the price and typically serves as a mid-walk rest point.

Is this tour suitable for children or older adults?

The walk’s easy rating and steady terrain make it accessible for a wide range of ages, provided guests are comfortable with a 6-hour outing. Children who enjoy being outdoors and exploring nature often find the route engaging due to its varied coastline and rock formations.
Older adults who regularly walk or exercise will usually find the tour manageable. The botanist adjusts the pace as needed, and frequent breaks help maintain comfort throughout the route.

What kind of landscapes and wildlife can I expect to see?

The southern coastline offers limestone bays, eroded rock structures, terraced fields, and stretches of low cliff paths. These areas host a range of coastal plants, including endemic species such as the Maltese salt tree, along with hardy shrubs adapted to the wind and salt spray.
You’ll also encounter agricultural zones with traditional dry-stone walls and cultivated fields, demonstrating the relationship between local farming and the island’s geology. Seabirds and coastal wildlife may be present along cliff edges and bays.

How private is the experience?

This is a fully private tour, meaning only your group participates. This ensures flexibility in pace, time spent at viewpoints, and the depth of botanical explanations. The guide can tailor the experience to your specific interests, such as plant identification, ecology, or geology.
Small group size also allows for individual questions and uninterrupted access to the botanist’s expertise, creating a more immersive educational experience than a standard group walk.

How do transfers work for guests staying in Gozo?

Guests staying in Gozo are collected directly from their accommodation, after which the group travels to the Gozo ferry terminal. Tickets for the ferry are not included and must be purchased on the spot. The botanist accompanies you throughout the transfer process.
After the tour, you return to Gozo via the same route. Pick-up and drop-off logistics are handled in advance to ensure smooth timings, especially when coordinating with ferry schedules.

What happens if the weather is unsuitable for walking?

If weather conditions make the route unsafe or uncomfortable - such as extreme heat, heavy rain, or strong coastal winds - the tour may be rescheduled. The botanist assesses conditions based on the safety and enjoyment of the walk.
In the event that rescheduling is not possible, the provider will offer appropriate alternatives or apply the standard cancellation policy. The aim is always to deliver a safe and worthwhile outdoor experience.
