Swap city streets for mountain trails on this private mountain biking experience in Vitosha, just outside Sofia. Suitable for all riding levels, the tour combines forest paths, mountain scenery and flexible route options with guided and self-guided experiences available.
Set on the southern slopes of Vitosha Mountain, this experience gives riders the chance to explore one of the most popular outdoor areas near Sofia. After meeting at the starting point, guests are equipped with a hardtail mountain bike and helmet before heading onto a selection of trails suited to their riding level and confidence.
Guided riders are accompanied by an experienced local mountain biker who selects routes based on the group’s pace and ability. Trails may include forest tracks, mountain paths and scenic hillside sections with views back across Sofia and the surrounding countryside. Riders choosing the self-guided option receive a detailed electronic guide with route notes and logistics information to follow independently.
Throughout the ride, the terrain varies between smoother sections and more uneven mountain trails, creating a balanced outdoor experience without requiring advanced mountain biking skills. The flexible format makes the activity suitable for families, beginners and more experienced riders looking to spend time outdoors close to the city.
Vitosha Mountain rises directly above Sofia and is one of Bulgaria’s best-known outdoor destinations for hiking, cycling and winter sports. Its southern slopes offer a mixture of woodland trails, open viewpoints and mountain scenery while remaining easily accessible from the city centre.
The area combines fresh mountain air with varied landscapes including forests, hillside paths and quieter natural spaces only a short distance from urban Sofia. Riders can experience a completely different side of the region without needing to travel far from the capital.
Participants should feel comfortable riding a bicycle on mixed outdoor terrain including gravel tracks and uneven paths. Although routes can be adjusted depending on experience level, a moderate level of fitness will help riders enjoy the activity more comfortably.
Suitable sportswear and comfortable footwear are recommended for the ride. Guests should also bring water, weather-appropriate clothing and any personal items they may need during the experience.
Flexible route planning and smaller private experiences allow riders to enjoy Vitosha Mountain at a comfortable pace while exploring trails suited to their confidence level. Experienced local riders help create a relaxed atmosphere throughout the activity while sharing knowledge of the mountain and surrounding area. The focus is on combining enjoyable riding with scenic outdoor experiences close to Sofia.
Yes, the routes can be adapted depending on riding confidence and previous experience. Beginners can enjoy easier trails and gentler terrain, while more experienced riders may explore more varied mountain paths during the activity.
The guided option is particularly useful for less experienced riders as the guide can adjust the route and pace throughout the experience to suit the group.
The guided option includes transport, hotel pickup and drop-off, along with an English-speaking mountain biking guide who leads the route throughout the experience. Riders benefit from local knowledge, route adjustments and support during the ride.
The self-guided option allows guests to explore independently using the provided electronic guide with detailed route information and logistics notes accessible on a mobile device.

The overall experience is rated as moderate, although trail difficulty can vary depending on the chosen route. Some sections include uneven surfaces, gravel tracks and gradual climbs while others are smoother and easier to ride.

Self-guided riders meet directly at Vitosha Mountain and make their own way to the starting location.
