Refresh your skills or build confidence on the water with a Powerboat Clinic in Fowey, Cornwall. Sessions are designed to focus on your needs, whether you want a refresher, practise specific manoeuvres, or gain experience handling a powerboat under supervision.
Sessions start with a discussion of your goals and areas you’d like to improve. Your instructor will assess your current abilities and plan exercises that are most relevant to you, whether that’s boosting confidence, refining techniques, or practising safety drills.
On the water, you will focus on practical handling exercises including turning, stopping, and precise docking. You will also practise launching and recovering the boat and performing manoeuvres in different conditions to simulate real-life boating scenarios.
If desired, your session can include navigation and passage planning exercises, applying collision regulations, and exploring local waters under guidance. The flexibility of the clinic allows you to focus on exactly what you want to achieve, making it an ideal refresher or confidence-building day.
Clinics are based in the sheltered coastal waters of Fowey, providing a safe and controlled setting for practical exercises. These waters offer a balance of calm conditions for learning while giving realistic opportunities to apply skills.
Local landmarks and marinas provide reference points for navigation practice and manoeuvring exercises. Tidal changes and prevailing conditions are considered to ensure that your session is both safe and productive while making the most of time on the water.
There are no strict prerequisites. The clinic can be adapted for those with minimal experience as well as for experienced boaters looking to refresh skills or practise specific techniques.
Participants should be able to swim and wear appropriate clothing for on-water activities. Trainers, non-slip shoes, and waterproof layers are recommended, along with personal items such as sun protection or a change of clothes to ensure comfort throughout the session.
Each clinic is delivered by a qualified RYA instructor who provides personalised guidance throughout the session. Small group sizes and one-to-one options mean every exercise is supervised, ensuring practical skills are reinforced and confidence is built effectively.
Sessions take place in real boating conditions on the Fowey coast, giving practical experience that can be applied directly to everyday boating. Flexible exercises and tailored guidance make this a highly effective way to improve competence, refresh skills, and enjoy time on the water.
Yes, each session is personalised to suit your experience. Beginners can practise basic handling and safety drills, while experienced boaters can focus on refining techniques, manoeuvring, and navigation skills.
Your instructor will assess your abilities at the start and design exercises that are relevant and challenging, ensuring every participant leaves more confident and competent on the water.
Half-day clinics run up to four hours, while full-day sessions last up to eight hours. The duration is flexible depending on your goals and availability, giving ample time to practise skills thoroughly.
This flexibility allows you to focus on specific areas such as docking, manoeuvring, or navigation, making the clinic highly effective whether you want a refresher or a more intensive training experience.
No prior experience is required. Clinics can accommodate complete beginners who wish to gain confidence as well as experienced boaters who want to refresh skills or practise specific manoeuvres.
Exercises are adapted to your level, ensuring that safety and learning objectives are balanced so you gain the most from the session without feeling overwhelmed.
Your instructor monitors conditions and adjusts exercises as needed to maintain safety. Sheltered areas or alternative manoeuvres may be used if the weather prevents certain activities.
This ensures the session remains productive, with focus on skill development and confidence-building even if conditions are less than ideal.
All safety equipment, including life jackets, is supplied. The powerboat used during the session is fully prepared for training, and your instructor will guide you on correct usage and procedures.
You may bring personal items such as drinks, snacks, or sunscreen. Clothing suitable for outdoor conditions and water activities is recommended to stay comfortable throughout the session.
