The north coast of Santo Antão runs from Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha on this 7-hour guided day. Fontainhas, a turtle-nesting beach and a long ocean-side finish sit on the same line. Hotel pickup and the return transfer sit around the walk.
Ponta do Sol is the fishing village of colourful waterfront houses where the cliff-top road begins above the ocean. The first stretch climbs toward Fontainhas, a village National Geographic once ranked among the world's most scenic, perched on a ridge above deep valleys. A steep descent then leads through Corvo and Formiguinhas into the Aranhas valley. The terrain is better for guests who are sure-footed than for very young children, and groups stay between one and eight people.
Praia das Aranhas is a black-sand beach used by nesting turtles. The picnic on that shore is included, and a swim is possible when the sea allows, so pack a swimsuit if you want to enter the water. After the pause, about two and a half hours run between volcanic rock and the Atlantic to Cruzinha, a quieter fishing settlement, before the transfer back to your hotel. Hiking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water are required on this moderate full-day line.
Ponta do Sol sits where fishing boats and painted houses meet cliffs that drop to the Atlantic, and the road out of the village climbs along the rock face so you look down on the sea for much of the first hour. Wind decides whether a dip at Praia das Aranhas is on, because this exposed north coast changes quickly. Public transport runs nearby if you arrive on the island by ferry and stay in town.
Fontainhas perches on a ridge above deep valleys. Praia das Aranhas is the black-sand beach used by nesting turtles. Cruzinha is a quieter fishing settlement further along the same coast. Collection and return are from your hotel, so you do not need to arrange a taxi between these hamlets.
Steep ground on the descent from Fontainhas and a long coastal finish make this a moderate full-day hike. You should be used to walking for several hours on uneven and sometimes exposed paths. The terrain is better for guests who are sure-footed than for very young children. Groups stay between one and eight people.
Hiking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water are required. The picnic is included, and you can swim at Praia das Aranhas when sea conditions allow, so pack a swimsuit if you want to enter the water. Shared and private hike rates are both available at checkout.
Guides walk this north-coast line regularly and know when the sea is calm enough for a dip and how to pace the descent from Fontainhas. The picnic on the black sand at Praia das Aranhas still leaves a long coastal walk ahead.
A famous village viewpoint, a turtle-nesting beach and a long ocean-side finish into Cruzinha sit in one day. The return transfer means you can sit back after the last kilometres of volcanic rock.
You start on foot from Ponta do Sol, a waterfront fishing village with colourful houses. Hotel pickup is included, so we collect you from your accommodation and take you to that start rather than asking you to find the cliff road alone.
The finish is Cruzinha, another small fishing village further along the coast. A return transfer then takes you back to your hotel. Tell us your stay when you book so the driver can plan both ends of the day.
This is a moderate hike and lasts about seven hours. You climb a cliff-top road out of Ponta do Sol, follow a winding ridge into Fontainhas, then take a steep descent through Corvo and Formiguinhas to the Aranhas valley.
After the picnic there is still a 2.5-hour walk on volcanic rock beside the ocean into Cruzinha. Hiking shoes with grip are essential. This is a full day on your feet, not a short village stroll.
Praia das Aranhas is a black-sand beach used by nesting turtles, and you can swim there when the sea is calm enough. Your guide decides on the day. The picnic is set on the shore so you have time to rest whether or not you enter the water.
Bring a swimsuit and a small towel if you hope to swim. Conditions on this exposed north coast change quickly, so a dip is never guaranteed.
National Geographic has listed Fontainhas among the ten villages with the best views in the world. The hamlet sits on a ridge reached by a narrow road cut into the mountain, with deep valleys on either side.
You walk through rather than only photographing it from a pull-in. The descent that follows toward Corvo and Formiguinhas is steep, so enjoy the ridge while you are still high.
Hiking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water are the items for this day. Add a swimsuit if you want the option to enter the sea at Praia das Aranhas, plus a light layer for wind on the cliffs.
The picnic is included, so you do not need to pack a full lunch. Extra snacks and more water are still wise on a seven-hour outing. Leave large luggage at the hotel.
This north-coast day is a moderate hike with a steep descent and a long rocky finish into Cruzinha, so it suits guests who already walk regularly rather than toddlers. You should be sure-footed on exposed paths and happy to stay on your feet for about seven hours.
Shared and private hike rates are priced per adult at checkout. Write to us with ages if you are booking a mixed family and want an honest view of the terrain.
Groups run from one guest to a maximum of eight. You can book a shared group hike or a private hike. The smaller cap keeps the cliff road and the descent manageable.
If your own party already fills most of the eight places, the day will feel almost private. Check remaining seats on the calendar for your date.
The return transfer to your accommodation is included. After the 2.5-hour coastal walk into Cruzinha you sit down in the vehicle rather than retracing the cliffs on foot.
Flights and the ferry or flight that brought you to Santo Antao are not included. Once you are on the island and checked into a hotel, we handle the day's road transfers.
Wind and swell mainly affect the swim at Praia das Aranhas. The walk itself still runs in everyday Atlantic cloud or a light shower, though the descent can be slippery.
We will contact you if a storm makes the cliff road or the coastal path unsafe. Everyday weather is treated as mildly affecting the day. Wear shoes you trust on damp rock.
Cancel 2 days or less before the Ponta do Sol to Cruzinha walk and the cancellation fee is 100%. Cancel 6 days or less before and it is 50%. Cancel up to 1000 days before the event and it is 0%.
Keep your hotel details current and write to us quickly if you need another date, so the cliff-road collection can be replanned.
