Sidemount diving has become increasingly popular among recreational and technical divers alike. Originally developed for cave diving, this equipment configuration places cylinders at your sides rather than on your back, creating a streamlined setup that many divers find comfortable, adaptable and enjoyable to use.
Rather than simply changing where cylinders are attached, sidemount diving introduces a completely different approach to equipment setup and underwater movement. Before entering the water, you'll complete the PADI eLearning and theory sessions covering the principles behind sidemount diving, equipment choices and safety considerations.
The practical training begins in confined water, where you'll learn how to assemble, adjust and configure sidemount equipment correctly. Your instructor will guide you through the setup process and help you become comfortable handling cylinders mounted alongside your body rather than on your back.
Once you're confident with the equipment, you'll complete four ocean dives applying your new skills in real diving conditions. These dives focus on buoyancy, trim, gas management and efficient movement underwater while helping you gain confidence using the sidemount configuration.
Throughout the course, you'll discover why many divers enjoy sidemount diving for its flexibility, comfort and streamlined profile. By the end of the programme, you'll be certified to dive safely using sidemount equipment and will have developed a strong understanding of how to use and maintain the configuration.
Training takes place in South Tenerife, where calm conditions and a variety of dive sites create an excellent environment for learning new equipment configurations.
The island's clear waters allow divers to focus on developing sidemount skills while enjoying a range of underwater environments during the training dives.
You must hold an Advanced Open Water Diver certification or an equivalent qualification from another recognised diving organisation before joining the course.
Participants should be confident using standard scuba equipment and comfortable conducting recreational dives before transitioning to sidemount configuration.
Learning a new equipment configuration can feel like starting fresh, and the instructors take a practical step-by-step approach to help divers adapt comfortably. Training focuses on understanding the equipment properly rather than simply completing certification requirements.
The combination of confined water practice and multiple ocean dives gives divers plenty of time to become familiar with sidemount techniques before using the configuration independently.
Sidemount diving is a scuba configuration where cylinders are attached alongside the diver rather than mounted on the back.
This arrangement provides a different balance in the water and allows divers to manage their cylinders individually throughout the dive.
Many divers enjoy sidemount because it can feel more comfortable and flexible than traditional back-mounted equipment.
The configuration also allows for excellent trim and can make handling equipment easier both in and out of the water.
No. The course is specifically designed to teach divers how to use sidemount equipment safely from the beginning.
You'll start with theory and confined water training before progressing to ocean dives.
Yes. A major part of the course focuses on configuring, adjusting and understanding sidemount equipment correctly.
Learning how the system works is essential for both comfort and safety underwater.
The course includes one confined water session followed by four ocean dives.
These dives allow you to practise new skills and become comfortable using sidemount equipment in real diving conditions.
No. Although sidemount originated in cave diving, it has become very popular among recreational divers.
Many divers use sidemount for standard recreational dives because they enjoy the configuration and comfort it offers.
