Ride out from Setúbal harbour in an open jeep and explore the Arrábida coast and hills in a small guided group. Your driver-guide links each stop with local history, from a hilltop castle and monastery art to hidden caves and a wine cellar tasting in one of Portugal's oldest wine regions.
Your half-day follows a loop from Setúbal into the hills and back, with photo stops and short walks at each highlight. The pace is relaxed, with time to look around castles, viewpoints and the chapel cave before finishing with a cellar visit and tasting near the José Maria da Fonseca wine area.
Expect a mix of sealed roads and quieter tracks through cork oak and pine, with wide views over the Sado estuary and Atlantic coast. Your guide shares stories at each stop so the landscape, history and local wine culture connect as you go.
Setúbal sits on the Setúbal peninsula south of Lisbon, where the Sado estuary meets the Atlantic. The harbour meeting point puts you minutes from the road into Arrábida Natural Park, a protected ridge of limestone cliffs, hidden coves and forested slopes that feel a world away from the city.
From Palmela Castle you look across the estuary and plains toward the Tagus, while Arrábida's peaks and the Portinho coast offer some of the clearest sea views in the region. The wine country around Azeitão adds another layer, with vineyards and cellars rooted in centuries of family production.
No off-road driving experience is needed. You ride as a passenger in the jeep while your guide drives and narrates the route. The tour suits families with young children, couples and small groups who want a scenic overview without a long hike.
Bring sun protection and a light layer for breezy viewpoints. Infant seats are available on request, and the route is stroller-friendly at several stops, though some castle and cave paths are uneven underfoot.
This is a curated loop rather than a quick photo stop. You visit a national monument castle, a biogenetic reserve, a hidden chapel cave and a working cellar in one coherent half-day, with a local guide who knows where to pause for the best views.
Small groups keep the jeep sociable and give you time to ask questions at each stop. Kit, route planning and cellar entry are handled for you, so you can focus on the scenery, history and tasting without juggling maps or tickets.
Your first stop is a historic monastery rich in 15th and 16th century art and archaeology. Step inside to see religious paintings, decorative details and finds that reflect centuries of worship and restoration in the Setúbal region. Your guide sets the scene before you explore at an easy pace.
Climb to Palmela Castle, a National Monument with roots in the 8th century and a decisive role in Portugal's early kingdom. From the walls you look over the Sado estuary, Arrábida slopes and the plains linking the Tagus and Sado river lines. Your guide explains how this hilltop position once guarded trade routes and connections between neighbouring fortresses.
Drive into Arrábida Natural Park, a biogenetic reserve stretching along the Setúbal peninsula across Palmela, Setúbal and Sesimbra. Pause at viewpoints along ridges such as Serra do Louro and Serra do Risco for photos of forest, cliffs and the Atlantic. At 501 metres, Pico do Formosinho marks the highest point in the park, and your guide points out the landmarks visible from each stop.
Visit the Lapa de Santa Margarida, a natural cave at the base of Serra da Arrábida with a 17th century chapel inside. The site sits near Portinho da Arrábida but is easy to miss without a local guide who knows the turn-off and short approach. Take a moment in the cool interior and hear how pilgrims and fishermen have used this hidden sanctuary for generations.
Finish with a visit and tasting at one of the oldest wine cellars in the Setúbal region, in the area associated with José Maria da Fonseca and generations of family winemaking since the 1830s. Tour the cellars, learn how local grapes are handled and sample regional wines with your guide on hand to explain styles and pairings. It is a relaxed end to the loop before the return drive to Setúbal harbour.
Meet at Edifício do Porto de Setúbal on Avenida Jaime Rebelo at Setúbal harbour (postcode 2900-572). Look for the port building on the waterfront; your guide will confirm the exact pick-up spot when the team contacts you after booking.
Setúbal is roughly 45 minutes south of Lisbon by car via the A2 and A12. Public transport serves the city, and parking is available near the harbour if you drive. Allow a few extra minutes to find the meeting point on busy days.

Setúbal
Based on Portugal's Setúbal coast, this outdoor team runs guided adventures across Arrábida, Sintra and Sesimbra — from canoeing and stand-up paddle to climbing, rappelling, coasteering and jeep tours. Days are built around national-park scenery, clear Atlantic water and well-briefed, equipment-ready sessions.
Guests join small guided groups with kit and safety cover included for the activity. Meeting points sit close to the trails, cliffs and coves used that day, so the focus stays on the experience rather than long transfers.
