Spend a full day outdoors on real rock with a qualified instructor. This is a gentle first taste of outdoor climbing, equally suited to complete beginners and indoor top-rope climbers who have not climbed outside before. The pace is calm and personal, with plenty of time on the rock and space to ask questions as you go.
You will climb several routes suited to beginners, with time to try different moves and feel how outdoor rock differs from a climbing wall. If you want to, you can learn to tie into a harness, start belaying, or try an abseil. Nothing is forced; the day is paced for fun and confidence rather than ticking skills off a list.
Exact crag and meeting point are confirmed after booking so they fit the weather and your group. Expect a short approach, a full outdoor day, and clear coaching at every step.
Portland is a coastal climbing area on the Jurassic Coast, with approachable routes, sea views, and plenty of beginner-friendly rock. Days can also be arranged in the Wye Valley when that suits your group better, for example if travel or conditions point that way.
Parking is limited at many venues, so plan to share cars where you can. Dogs are best left at home as access can be awkward and approaches are not always dog-friendly.
No outdoor climbing experience is needed. Indoor top-rope experience is welcome but not required. You should be happy walking a short approach to the crag and spending a full day outdoors in changeable British weather.
Under-18s must climb with a parent or legal guardian for the whole session. Maximum participant weight is 100kg.
Instruction is progressive and personal, with a strong focus on safety and clear teaching. Guests often say they learn a lot and feel looked after throughout the day, which matters on a first outdoor climb when nerves and questions are normal.
Groups stay small so everyone gets time on the rock, coaching that matches their pace, and plenty of chance to ask questions without feeling rushed.
Meet your instructor at the agreed point, get fitted with a helmet and harness, and run through the plan for the day. There is time to ask questions before anyone leaves the ground.
A short walk brings you to a beginner-friendly section of crag, chosen on the day to suit the weather and your group.
Try several routes suited to first-timers, with the rope managed for you from above. You will get a feel for balance, footwork, and how outdoor rock differs from a climbing wall.
There is no pressure to reach the top of anything. The instructor picks climbs that stretch you just enough to feel like progress.
If you want to, learn to tie into a harness, take your first turn belaying, or try an abseil where the venue allows it. These are offered rather than required.
The day finishes with a debrief on what you enjoyed and what a next step outdoors could look like, whether that is another day out or an indoor course.
No. This day is designed for first-timers on outdoor rock and for people who have only top-roped indoors. The instructor sets the pace around your group.
If you already climb indoors, you can focus on how outdoor rock feels different while still covering the basics you need for a safe first day outside.
Most days run on Portland, Dorset. A similar day can be arranged in the Wye Valley when that suits you better. The exact crag and meeting point are confirmed after you book.
You will get clear joining instructions before the day, including parking notes for the venue in use.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and trainer-style shoes. Bring food, water, an extra layer, suncream, and a rucksack for the day outdoors.
Climbing shoes are not required for this introduction. All technical climbing equipment is provided.
Yes. Helmet, harness, rope, and other technical climbing kit are provided. You do not need to own any climbing gear for this day.
Climbing shoes are not included; everyday trainers are fine for a first outdoor session.
The minimum age is 6. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian for the whole session.
The day is paced for beginners, so younger climbers are welcome when a parent is climbing with them and the group size stays within the published limit.
Outdoor climbing depends on conditions. If the forecast makes the day unsafe or unsuitable, you will be contacted to rearrange where possible.
Bring layers and expect a full day outside when the weather is workable. Exact venue choice can also shift with conditions.
You can begin learning to tie in and belay, and there is often a chance to try an abseil if the venue and group allow it. Nothing is forced.
The priority is time on the rock and a positive first outdoor experience, with skills introduced at a pace that suits you.
Dogs are not banned, but many venues are awkward to access with a dog, so it is usually best to leave them at home.
If you need to bring a dog, ask when you book so the instructor can advise based on the planned venue.
The day usually runs from around 10:00 to 17:00, with a short approach to the crag and time for several climbs. Exact timing is confirmed with your joining instructions once the venue is set.
Plan for a full outdoor day rather than a short session. Bring food and water so you can stay at the crag comfortably through the afternoon.
Yes. Groups of one to six people are welcome, and the day works well for friends, families, and mixed-ability beginners climbing together. Under-18s need a parent or legal guardian with them for the whole session.
If you are booking a larger party, choose the option that matches your group size when you book so everyone is on the same day and the instructor can plan the crag accordingly.
