Guided E-Bike Tour: Appia Antica, Aqueduct Park and Catacombs

Light rain doesn’t affect the running of the tour, so the activity goes ahead as planned. Participants are offered complimentary waterproof ponchos to keep them comfortable throughout, and the guide adjusts the pace if needed to suit the conditions. Many groups enjoy the experience just as much in gentle rain, especially with the extra layer provided.

More severe conditions, such as heavy rain or thunderstorms, mean the tour cannot run safely. If this happens, the session is cancelled and the full amount paid is refunded. Safety is the guiding factor in these decisions, and updates are passed on as early as possible so participants know exactly what to expect.

We welcome a wide range of ages on our e-bike tours, and the equipment provided is matched carefully to each rider. Younger children can join using either a rear baby seat for ages 1–5 (up to 20 kg) or a trailer bike for ages 6–9, both of which are securely attached to an adult’s e-bike. From age 10 onward, children may ride their own e-bike if they have solid independent cycling experience and are at least 140 cm tall, though we generally recommend independent riding from age 11.

There are also a few upper limits to keep everyone safe and comfortable. The maximum recommended age for participants is 75, and the weight limit for any rider or equipment setup is 100 kg. These guidelines help ensure each bike performs as intended and that every participant enjoys a smooth and controlled ride.

Our regular tours operate with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 8 participants, which keeps each outing comfortable and well-paced. These small-group limits apply to standard daily departures, ensuring riders receive plenty of guidance and support from the team throughout the experience.

For larger parties, the capacity expands significantly. The centre is fully equipped to organise multiple groups at the same time and can handle single bookings far above the usual numbers, with the ability to accommodate up to 80 participants in one coordinated session. This structure allows big groups to enjoy the same quality of service while moving through the route smoothly and safely.

You will cycle along the famous Via Appia Antica, passing monuments such as Capo di Bove, Sepulchre of the Festoons, and the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella. The route also includes scenic stops in Aqueduct Park, Tor Fiscale Park, and Caffarella Park, providing a mixture of natural landscapes and ancient engineering marvels. Each stop is chosen to give insight into Roman history, architecture, and daily life in antiquity.

A guided visit to the Catacombs of San Callisto adds a further layer of historical depth. Descending into these labyrinthine chambers, you will experience first-hand the burial practices and religious history of early Rome. Your guide will share detailed stories, explaining symbolism, architecture, and the cultural context of these underground spaces.

Yes, the tour is designed to be family-friendly. Children under 12 may ride with a trailer or extension, and infants up to 20 kg can travel in a child seat. The roads are largely traffic-free, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for riders of varying ages. Safety instructions and regular briefings from the guide ensure that all riders understand the route and how to ride safely.

Families can enjoy a combination of natural scenery and educational storytelling. Parks along the route provide shade and rest spots, allowing for breaks and photography, while the Catacombs visit introduces children to history in an engaging and memorable way.

Comfortable clothing and closed footwear suitable for cycling are essential. While e-bikes assist with pedalling, you should be prepared for both paved and dirt paths. Bringing water is recommended, especially on warmer days, and helmets are provided to guarantee safety.

Optional items such as sunglasses, light jackets, or gloves may enhance comfort depending on the weather. The guide will provide safety equipment, locks, and any additional instructions needed for a smooth and safe ride.

Yes, private tours offer an exclusive experience with your guide. This option allows you to adjust the pace, linger at favorite sites, and tailor the tour according to your interests. Private tours are ideal for families, small groups, or anyone seeking a more personalised experience.

You will also benefit from flexible scheduling and a guided commentary focused entirely on your group’s preferences. Every stop, from aqueducts to Catacombs, can be explored more thoroughly without feeling rushed, making it a premium way to experience the Appia Antica.
