Enjoy a morning e-bike ride along the Appian Way, combining history, nature, and technology. Cycle past ancient roads, monumental tombs, and Roman aqueducts, then experience a Virtual Reality visit to the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella. A private option is available for a fully personalised tour.
Your adventure starts at a strategic location on the Appian Way, avoiding busy city streets and allowing for a relaxed, focused ride. Cycle along the millennial basalt paving stones, surrounded by maritime pines and ancient ruins, while your guide shares stories of Roman engineering, emperors, and pilgrims.
The first highlight is the Aqueducts Park (Parco degli Acquedotti), where the imposing Claudio Aqueduct towers over the landscape. Pedal through quiet paths and open fields, pausing for photos and reflection.
The tour culminates at the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, a symbolic monument of the Appian Way. Here, put on a VR viewer for an immersive experience that recreates the Mausoleum and Castle of the Caetani as they appeared 2,000 years ago. Return along peaceful sections of the Appian Way, passing Tor Fiscale and Caffarella parks, before finishing at the starting point.
The Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) stretches from central Rome into the countryside, combining historic paving stones, dirt paths, and traffic-restricted roads. This route is largely free from vehicles, providing a safe and immersive experience amidst tombs, villas, and Roman ruins.
Parco degli Acquedotti features towering aqueduct arches set against open fields, while Tor Fiscale and Caffarella parks offer quiet corners of Roman history and nature. Early morning light enhances the atmosphere, making this a unique way to see the city and surrounding landscape.
Riders should have basic-intermediate cycling experience. Children under 12 may use bike extensions or child seats, while anyone riding their own e-bike must be at least 12 years old. Closed-toe shoes and suitable clothing are recommended, along with water and a small bag for personal items. The guide may assess riding ability before departure to ensure safety.
Our experienced local guides combine historical knowledge with practical advice to make the ride informative, safe, and engaging. Small groups allow for a personalised pace and plenty of opportunity to stop and enjoy the scenery.
High-quality e-bikes, helmets, and locks are provided for a comfortable ride. The early start, serene paths, and views over Roman ruins create a memorable experience away from crowds, perfect for photographers, history lovers, or anyone seeking a quiet adventure.
Light rain doesn’t affect the running of the tour, so the activity goes ahead as planned. Participants are offered complimentary waterproof ponchos to keep them comfortable throughout, and the guide adjusts the pace if needed to suit the conditions. Many groups enjoy the experience just as much in gentle rain, especially with the extra layer provided.
More severe conditions, such as heavy rain or thunderstorms, mean the tour cannot run safely. If this happens, the session is cancelled and the full amount paid is refunded. Safety is the guiding factor in these decisions, and updates are passed on as early as possible so participants know exactly what to expect.
We welcome a wide range of ages on our e-bike tours, and the equipment provided is matched carefully to each rider. Younger children can join using either a rear baby seat for ages 1–5 (up to 20 kg) or a trailer bike for ages 6–9, both of which are securely attached to an adult’s e-bike. From age 10 onward, children may ride their own e-bike if they have solid independent cycling experience and are at least 140 cm tall, though we generally recommend independent riding from age 11.
There are also a few upper limits to keep everyone safe and comfortable. The maximum recommended age for participants is 75, and the weight limit for any rider or equipment setup is 100 kg. These guidelines help ensure each bike performs as intended and that every participant enjoys a smooth and controlled ride.
Basic to intermediate cycling experience is recommended. The guide will provide safety instructions and assess your riding ability before departure.
Infants (up to 20 kg / 44 lbs) can ride in a child seat for free. Children under 139 cm / 4ft 7in must use a bike extension or trailer. The minimum age for riding an e-bike independently is 12 years old.
Most of the 3-hour tour is on the ancient paving stones of the Appian Way, with short sections of dirt paths and limited road crossings. The pace is relaxed to allow time for sightseeing and VR experiences.
The standard tour is small group (max 8 guests per guide). Private tour options are available for a personalised experience.
Closed-toe shoes, comfortable cycling clothing, sunscreen, water, and a small bag for personal items are recommended. Helmets are provided.
