Gosforth

Exploring beyond recreational limits requires specialised gas mixtures to manage nitrogen narcosis. This course teaches the skills needed to plan and execute dives up to 45 meters using trimix as a bottom gas, along with decompression gases. Divers gain hands-on experience with multi-cylinder management and advanced dive planning.
The course begins at the Gosforth centre with an in-depth theory programme. You’ll learn the physiology of deep diving, the use of trimix to reduce narcosis, and how to plan dives that require decompression stops. Instructors provide real-world examples and exercises to consolidate your understanding.
Confined water sessions allow you to practice gas switching, multi-cylinder management, and controlled ascents. Open water dives are then conducted at local sites such as Capernwray, Ellerton, or Beadnell Bay, with instructors supervising every dive. Practical application ensures you gain competence in handling complex dive situations, managing gases, and following decompression procedures.
Theory and preparation take place at the Gosforth centre. Confined water training is delivered at the Elsdon Avenue pool in Seaton Delaval, Whitley Bay. Open water dives occur at selected local sites appropriate for deep and technical diving.
These sites provide controlled, safe conditions to practise advanced dive techniques under the guidance of experienced instructors. Access to multiple dive locations ensures flexibility and thorough skill development.
Participants must hold Deep, Nitrox, Sidemount, or Twinset certifications and have logged at least 20 hours of diving. Prior experience with multi-cylinder dives and advanced planning is required to safely undertake trimix dives.
Divers should be physically fit and familiar with buoyancy control, regulator management, and emergency procedures. Instructors offer step-by-step guidance to reinforce understanding of trimix use, decompression management, and multi-cylinder handling, ensuring safe progression.
Instructors bring extensive experience in technical and deep diving, providing personalised coaching throughout the course. Small group sizes allow focused attention and individual feedback on both theory and practical dives.
Training uses a combination of confined and open water environments to ensure divers master trimix and decompression techniques in controlled settings before attempting deep dives independently. Safety, competence, and confidence are emphasised throughout every stage of the programme.
Trimix dives use a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen, and helium to reduce nitrogen narcosis at deeper depths. This course teaches divers to plan and execute dives to 45 meters safely while managing multiple cylinders and decompression gases.
Practical exercises allow divers to experience gas switching, multi-cylinder handling, and deep diving procedures in real conditions. Instructors provide guidance on safe dive planning and emergency protocols, ensuring you gain confidence for technical dives.
Yes, divers must hold relevant certifications in Deep, Nitrox, Sidemount, or Twinset and have logged a minimum of 20 hours of diving. The course builds on this experience to introduce trimix and deep decompression procedures safely.
Hands-on training in both confined and open water environments ensures divers understand trimix use, decompression schedules, and emergency handling. Instructors provide detailed feedback to ensure skills are mastered before attempting open water dives independently.
The course spans several days to cover theory, confined water practice, and open water dives. Sufficient time is allocated for participants to practise gas management, decompression stops, and deep diving procedures.
Detailed guidance and feedback are provided throughout, with opportunities to repeat exercises as needed. This structured approach ensures all divers develop competence and confidence for trimix diving.
Participants must provide or hire suitable technical diving gear, including multi-cylinder setups for trimix and decompression dives. Instructors demonstrate safe setup and management of equipment for all sessions.
The use of personal or hired equipment allows for realistic practice and ensures divers are confident in handling multi-cylinder and gas-switching procedures. Safety and correct use are emphasised throughout the course.
Successful completion awards a Trimix Decompression Diver certification, recognising your ability to plan and execute deep dives using trimix and decompression gases.
This qualification allows divers to safely conduct dives to 45 meters with multiple cylinders and forms a foundation for further technical and extended decompression training.
