Paddle along the River South Esk in Angus for a day of fun and adventure. Calm stretches alternate with gentle grade 1 rapids, giving you the chance to build your skills and enjoy some light excitement. Scenic views and wildlife spotting make this a memorable trip on the water.
Meet your guide at Gella Bridge for a safety briefing and to get kitted out with wetsuits, buoyancy aids, and paddles. From there, you’ll head to the starting point near Glen Clova Hotel to begin your 5-6 hour river adventure.
You’ll paddle through calm sections where you can focus on your balance and technique, then hit gentle rapids that add a bit of excitement without being intimidating. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way – you might spot kingfishers, ospreys, or even beavers. Halfway through, there’s a break for a snack, a drink, and a chance to relax while enjoying the scenery.
Heading back to Gella Bridge wraps up the day. You can change into warm clothes and collect your car, feeling accomplished and refreshed. Private sessions are available if you want a more personal adventure for up to 12 people.
Gella Bridge, Glen Clova, has plenty of parking for cars and small vans. The area gives you a mix of open water and quiet wooded sections for a varied paddle along the river.
Along the way, gentle bends and calm stretches let you focus on paddling skills, while small rapids keep things interesting. The scenery includes forests, rolling countryside, and the occasional glimpse of wildlife, making every moment enjoyable.
You’ll need a little paddleboarding experience to get the most from this trip. If you’ve only tried flat water a few times, we recommend a beginner session first before joining this river adventure.
Moderate fitness is handy as you’ll be on the water for up to six hours. Bring a packed lunch and drinks, be ready to carry your own kit, and follow your guide’s instructions for a safe, fun day.
Expert guides lead the way, offering tips on technique, safety, and spotting wildlife. With all essential kit provided, you can just focus on having fun and paddling your way down the river.
Small group sizes mean you get more attention and guidance. You’ll get to explore calm stretches, gentle rapids, and enjoy some of Angus’ best scenery while learning and improving your paddleboarding skills.
You’ll need to come prepared for time on the water, so make sure to bring essentials that keep you comfortable before, during, and after your session. A towel and a full change of clothes are recommended in case you get wet, along with swimwear or trunks to wear under a wetsuit. It’s also a good idea to wear shoes that can get wet or bring a spare pair for afterwards.
Snacks and drinks will help keep your energy up, especially on longer sessions. If you take any medication, please ensure you have it with you on the day. And, most importantly, bring a sense of adventure and a willingness to have fun—this makes all the difference on the water.
These activities are open to participants aged 12 and above. This ensures everyone taking part can safely handle the equipment and enjoy the experience. The sessions are designed to be inclusive and family-friendly while still maintaining the right level of supervision and safety for younger participants.
Anyone under 18 must have a parent or guardian either on the water with them or nearby at the viewing point for the duration of the session. This policy may vary slightly depending on the specific activity or location, but safety and supervision are always the top priority.
All sessions depend on the weather and water conditions to make sure they’re safe and fun for everyone involved. In the case of strong winds, heavy rain, or unsafe water levels, sessions may need to be postponed or moved to a more sheltered location. The decision will always be made with your safety in mind.
If a session has to be rescheduled or relocated, you’ll be contacted in advance with as much notice as possible. The team keeps a close eye on forecasts and conditions, and any changes will be clearly communicated so that you can plan your day with confidence.
You should have a little experience on a paddleboard before joining this trip. This is not suitable for complete beginners, as the adventure lasts up to six hours and includes some gentle rapids. If you’re brand new, consider attending one of the beginner flat-water sessions first to build confidence.
Even if you’ve only paddled a few times, this trip can be a great way to improve your skills. The guides will give tips and support throughout, helping you manage both calm stretches and the mild rapids along the way.
Moderate fitness is recommended for this adventure. You’ll be on the water for several hours, paddling continuously and occasionally navigating rapids. It’s a gentle challenge, but you should be comfortable being active for 5–6 hours.
The pace is friendly and relaxed, with breaks built in. You don’t need to be an athlete – just ready to enjoy the day and follow your guide’s instructions.
Yes! If you have your own board, you’re welcome to bring it along, and you’ll get a £10 discount on the session. Make sure it’s suitable for river paddling and check with the guides if you have any doubts.
Using your own gear can be a great option if you’re already familiar with it, giving you even more control and comfort on the water.
Yes! You can bring children aged 12 and above. Younger paddlers must be accompanied by a parent or guardian nearby. This is a great way to share a day on the river together, enjoy nature, and try something new.
Guides will ensure everyone gets support and instruction appropriate to their ability, making the day fun and safe for all.
Keep your eyes open for kingfishers, ospreys, and even beavers along the South Esk. The calm sections of the river are perfect for spotting wildlife in its natural habitat, while the rapids add some excitement to your day.
Birds, fish, and other local creatures make this trip not only fun but also a chance to connect with nature. Guides will point out interesting spots and help you observe safely without disturbing the animals.
