Set in the heart of Great Langdale, this beginner-friendly ghyll scrambling session offers a fun and active way to explore the Lake District. It’s well suited to families and those new to scrambling, with supportive guidance throughout. Expect a mix of water, rock and movement as you work your way upstream.
Your session starts with a friendly introduction and kit check before heading over to the ghyll. A short briefing covers how to move safely on wet rock, what to expect from the route, and how the group will work together throughout the session. Once everyone is ready, you’ll enter the water and begin your gradual ascent upstream.
Progressing through the ghyll brings a mix of small climbs, shallow pools and flowing sections of water. Some areas offer optional challenges like short slides or slightly steeper rock steps, while easier lines are always available, making it ideal for beginners and younger participants. Movement is steady and guided, with plenty of support to help build confidence as you go.
Time is taken to enjoy each section rather than rushing through, allowing everyone to get comfortable with the terrain. Guides stay close throughout, offering tips and reassurance where needed, and adjusting the route to suit the group’s pace. By the end, you’ll have covered a variety of features and gained a solid introduction to ghyll scrambling.
Great Langdale provides a well-known yet spacious setting within the Lake District, with wide valley views and easy access to surrounding fells. The area is popular for outdoor activities thanks to its mix of accessibility and natural features, making it an excellent starting point for those new to the mountains.
The ghyll itself winds down from higher ground, creating a series of rock steps, pools and gentle cascades that are well suited to beginners. Paths leading to the start point are clear and manageable, with nearby parking and facilities making the overall experience straightforward for families and groups.
No previous experience is required for this session, making it a great option for first-timers and families with younger participants. A basic level of fitness will help, as you’ll be moving through water and over uneven ground for the duration of the activity.
Confidence in water is useful, but strong swimming ability isn’t necessary due to the shallow nature of most sections. Guidance is provided throughout, with instructors helping you move safely and comfortably at every stage.
Experienced, qualified instructors lead each session with a strong focus on safety, awareness and enjoyment. Every group is different, so the day is adapted to match your pace and confidence, ensuring a supportive environment from start to finish.
Time in the ghyll is about more than just getting from bottom to top. Along the way, you’ll pick up practical movement skills, learn how to read the terrain and gain confidence in a mountain environment, helping you feel more capable on future outdoor days.
Yes, this session is designed specifically for those with little or no prior experience. The route is carefully chosen to provide a manageable introduction to ghyll scrambling, with features that allow you to build confidence gradually without feeling overwhelmed.
Guides will explain each section clearly and offer hands-on support where needed. Alternative options are available throughout the route, so you can choose how much you want to challenge yourself while still being part of the group.
Safety is a key focus throughout the session, especially when working with younger participants. The route at Sticklebarn is known for being well suited to children, with manageable water flow, smaller rock steps and accessible exit points if needed.
Instructors closely supervise the group at all times, providing clear guidance and assistance. The aim is to create a safe, controlled environment where children can enjoy the activity while parents feel reassured.
Strong swimming ability is not required for this activity. Most sections of the ghyll are shallow, and movement tends to involve walking, scrambling and stepping rather than swimming.
That said, you should feel comfortable being in water and getting fully wet. If you have concerns, it’s always worth discussing them beforehand so the session can be tailored to your comfort level.
You’ll need to bring suitable footwear that can get wet and has good grip, such as old trainers. A towel and dry clothes for after the session are also recommended, along with snacks or drinks if you’d like them.
Once booked, you’ll receive a detailed information sheet outlining everything required. This helps ensure you arrive prepared and ready to get the most out of your time in the ghyll.
This is considered an easy session, but it still involves steady movement over uneven terrain and through flowing water. Expect to be active for the full duration, using your hands and feet to move over rocks and small obstacles.
Pacing is relaxed and adjusted to suit the group, with regular pauses built in. As long as you have a basic level of fitness and are happy being active outdoors, you should find it manageable.
Sessions run in a wide range of weather conditions, as water-based activities often continue safely in rain. However, conditions are closely monitored, particularly water levels and flow within the ghyll.
If conditions are considered unsafe, alternative arrangements will be offered. This may include rescheduling your session or providing another suitable option where possible.
Wetsuits are provided to help keep you warm while in the water. These are designed to retain body heat and allow you to stay comfortable throughout the session, even when fully immersed.
Movement also helps maintain warmth, as you’ll be active for most of the time. On cooler days, bringing warm layers for before and after the session is recommended.
While the session is ideal for families, adults often find it just as enjoyable. The mix of movement, water features and outdoor setting makes it a great experience regardless of age.
Options within the route allow adults to take on slightly more challenging lines if they wish, while still keeping the overall experience accessible and fun.
