Basic diesel engine maintenance and fault-finding can make all the difference when you’re out on the water. Whether you're looking to prevent breakdowns or handle emergency repairs, our one-day RYA Diesel Engine course will equip you with the skills needed to keep your boat running smoothly. Covering the full RYA syllabus, the course includes both theory and hands-on practice using our workshop engines, giving you practical experience and confidence in diesel engine maintenance.
Throughout the day, you will be guided by a trained RYA Diesel Engine instructor who will take you through the core components of engine maintenance. The course covers the basic operation of a diesel engine, how to conduct routine inspections, and key fault-finding techniques in the event of a breakdown. You’ll have the opportunity to get hands-on experience with two workshop engines, making the theory come to life. By the end of the day, you’ll understand how to carry out essential maintenance and repairs, which could be vital in avoiding costly or dangerous situations at sea.
The course is held at our training centre in Newark, Nottinghamshire, where you’ll have access to a fully equipped workshop and classroom environment for both theory and practical learning.
We are an RYA-recognised training centre with a focus on delivering practical, hands-on courses in a supportive learning environment. Our experienced instructors ensure that you not only understand the theory but also have plenty of time to practice and gain confidence. With small class sizes (maximum 8:1 ratio), you’ll get personalised attention and guidance throughout the day. For groups, we’re happy to arrange bespoke course dates that fit your schedule, and we offer courses for commercial and government organisations as well.
Note: If the minimum number of participants is not met, we will reschedule the course or offer a refund.
This course runs every two months, but custom dates can be arranged for groups or organisations.

Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, such as overalls or working clothes, as you may come into contact with diesel, oil, or grease. We recommend safety boots or sturdy footwear. Also, bring wet weather gear in case of outdoor work. We will provide gloves and safety glasses.
The course offers a combination of both. You’ll spend time in the classroom learning the theory behind diesel engines and then put that knowledge into practice with our workshop engines. The balance ensures you get hands-on experience while understanding the principles behind engine maintenance.
The course runs from 09:00 to 17:00, with breaks for tea and coffee and a lunch break. Please ensure you arrive on time to maximise your learning experience.
Yes, upon successful completion of the course and passing the assessment, you will receive a course completion certificate. We will also keep a record of your certification for seven years.

We will supply gloves, safety glasses, and all necessary learning materials.
We run the Diesel Engine course every two months, but we are happy to organise additional dates for groups, commercial, or government organisations. If you have a group, we can also schedule a course to suit your diary.
