Designed for photographers who want more than just a sightseeing tour, this private EcoTour takes you off the beaten track to capture Yellowstone’s wildlife, landscapes, and geothermal features through your lens. Whether you're chasing the perfect light, hoping to frame rare animal behaviour, or refining camera skills in the field, this is a photography-first experience built entirely around you.
This is a fully personalised photo adventure, shaped around your interests and photographic goals. Before you even arrive, you’ll speak directly with your guide to plan the day—from the types of shots you're after to your preferred pace and shooting style. Whether you want to follow bison across open valleys, capture steam rising off thermal vents, or seek out predators in remote corners of the park, the tour is tailored to your brief.
Half-day tours are ideal for focusing on specific subjects, while full-day options give you time to chase different lighting conditions, visit multiple areas, and spend longer in key wildlife zones. Throughout the day, your guide—an award-winning photographer—will offer technical guidance, location planning, and expert support to help you create your best images, no matter the weather or subject.
The EcoTour takes place throughout Yellowstone National Park, a vast, varied landscape known for its wildlife density and geothermal activity. Locations may include Lamar Valley, Hayden Valley, the northern range, Mammoth Hot Springs, or geyser basins depending on the season, road access, and wildlife movement.
Tours typically begin from Gardiner or Mammoth, but specific start points and daily plans are set based on your interests and the conditions on the ground. Your guide’s deep familiarity with the park ensures you’re positioned in the right place at the right time for the best photographic opportunities.
This tour is open to photographers aged 16+ of all experience levels. Whether you're just getting to grips with manual settings or are confident with your gear but want expert field support, the session will meet you at your level. You'll need to be reasonably fit, able to walk short distances on uneven terrain, and dressed for changing weather. While this experience is not wheelchair accessible, alternative arrangements may be available with advance notice.
The centre is led by Brian, a lifelong photographer who grew up around cameras and darkrooms before specialising in nature and wildlife photography. He’s been shooting with Canon gear since the 1980s and has spent over 30 years exploring Yellowstone’s landscapes, geysers, and ecosystems through a lens. His practical knowledge and calm teaching style make him a valuable guide for anyone wanting to push their photography further.
This isn't a pre-set tour with a standard route. Each EcoTour is built from the ground up, based on what you want to shoot and how you want to spend your time. Brian offers the technical expertise, local insight, and respect for wildlife that turns a day in Yellowstone into a real photography adventure.
This EcoTour is designed for photographers of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced enthusiasts. Whether you’re just learning to use manual settings on your camera or you already have experience but want to refine your skills in the field, the guide will customise the instruction to match your level and goals.
The focus is on helping you get better photographs while also enjoying the adventure of Yellowstone. Technical advice, tips on composition, and field techniques will be offered throughout, making this tour both a learning experience and a chance to capture unique images.
You are encouraged to bring your own DSLR or mirrorless camera, along with any lenses you prefer, such as telephoto for wildlife or wide-angle for landscapes. A tripod is highly recommended, especially for shooting in low light or capturing geothermal features with long exposures.
While basic equipment like spotting scopes may be provided, you should bring any specialised gear you need, including extra batteries, memory cards, and protective cases. The guide can offer advice during the pre-trip consultation to help you prepare your kit for Yellowstone’s conditions.
The tour requires a moderate level of fitness. You should be comfortable walking short distances on uneven, sometimes snowy or muddy terrain, and able to stand outdoors for extended periods. Some locations may require gentle hiking or moving off main trails to reach optimal shooting spots.
If you have mobility concerns, please discuss these before booking. While the tour is not wheelchair accessible, some accommodations for limited mobility may be possible depending on the terrain and conditions.
Yellowstone is home to a diverse range of wildlife including bison, elk, wolves, bears, foxes, eagles, and more. Sightings depend on the season, time of day, and luck, but your guide’s extensive local knowledge will maximise the chances of encountering and photographing key species.
The tour emphasises responsible and ethical wildlife viewing practices, ensuring animals are not disturbed or stressed. Your guide will help you understand animal behaviour and positioning to get safe, respectful shots.
For full-day EcoTours, a picnic lunch will be provided, along with snacks and water bottle refills to keep you energised throughout your adventure. Half-day tours typically include snacks and refreshments but not a full meal.
If you have any dietary restrictions or preferences, it’s important to notify the organisers ahead of time so arrangements can be made accordingly.
Yellowstone’s weather can be unpredictable, ranging from bright sunshine to sudden rain or snow, even outside of winter months. Your guide is experienced in adapting plans to changing weather to make the most of photographic opportunities while keeping you safe.
Proper clothing is essential, including layers, waterproof outerwear, and sturdy footwear. The tour will proceed in most weather conditions, but extreme weather or unsafe conditions may require rescheduling for your safety.
Yes, the EcoTour accommodates solo travellers and small groups of up to three people. The private nature of the tour means that the guide can focus entirely on your interests and provide personalised instruction and support.
Small groups create a more intimate experience, allowing for flexible schedules and tailored photographic opportunities without the distractions or limitations of larger tours.
Absolutely. One of the core benefits of this EcoTour is expert guidance on camera operation, settings, and photographic techniques tailored to the conditions and subjects you’re working with.
