Take on one of Iceland’s most iconic long-distance hikes on a privately guided crossing between Skógar and Þórsmörk. This full-day route links waterfalls, glaciers and recent volcanic terrain, finishing with Super Jeep support out of the valley.
The day begins at Skógafoss, where the trail immediately follows the Skógá River upstream past a long series of waterfalls. The route gradually gains height, moving from lush lowland terrain into more exposed ground as you climb towards the Fimmvörðuháls pass.
Higher up, the landscape becomes more rugged and volcanic. The trail passes between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, with views across glaciers, ice caps and the surrounding highlands in clear conditions. You’ll walk across lava fields formed during the 2010 eruption and pass the volcanic craters Móði and Magni, seeing first-hand how recently this landscape was reshaped.
From the high point, the route descends into Þórsmörk, with wide views into glacial valleys and river systems below. After completing the hike, a Super Jeep collects the group in Þórsmörk for the return journey. The drive includes views of Gígjökull glacier and the Markarfljót floodplain, with a final stop at Seljalandsfoss before returning to Skógar. Depending on weather and trail conditions, the route may be operated in reverse.
Fimmvörðuháls sits between two major glaciers in South Iceland and connects the Skógar area with the sheltered valleys of Þórsmörk. The route is known for its variety, moving from waterfalls and green slopes into high volcanic terrain before dropping back into glacially carved valleys.
The standard meeting point is at Skógar, in front of Skógafoss waterfall. Access logistics are handled as part of the day, with Super Jeep transport arranged from Þórsmörk at the end of the hike.
This hike is rated Demanding and is suitable only for those in very good hiking condition with experience of long days on rough terrain. You should be comfortable covering around 25 km with sustained elevation gain and loss over 10–12 hours.
Participants must be prepared for rapidly changing weather, including cold, wind and potential snow at higher elevations, even in summer. Proper clothing, footwear and sufficient food and water are essential.
Running this route requires detailed knowledge of weather patterns, trail conditions and logistics at both ends of the hike. The approach here prioritises timing, safety and flexibility, with the ability to reverse the route if conditions demand it.
Guides are experienced local professionals, many with Search and Rescue backgrounds, and are used to operating on long, exposed routes. Super Jeep support at the end of the hike allows the day to flow smoothly without additional transport planning for guests.
