Susi and the team were excellent. The facilities and location for our very first time on SUPs were great. We had a blast!

Spend time outdoors learning to shoot in a natural woodland setting just outside Dunbar. This two-hour session introduces you to traditional target archery using recurve bows, with plenty of coaching and friendly competition along the way. It’s a relaxed but focused experience, ideal for friends, families and group events.
Your session begins at the base, where you’ll meet your instructor and be fitted with arm guards and finger tabs before walking ten minutes through the woodland to the range. Once there, you’ll receive a full safety briefing and an introduction to the equipment. The instructor will demonstrate correct stance, how to nock an arrow, draw the bow smoothly and release with control. You’ll start at a comfortable distance, focusing on consistency before gradually increasing range as confidence builds.
With guidance throughout, you’ll move into structured target practice. Coaching is tailored to the group, whether you’re completely new or looking to refine existing skills. Expect plenty of individual feedback alongside light-hearted competition, with scoring rounds and fun shooting challenges to keep things engaging.
To finish, the group takes on the well-known Hammerschlagen challenge. It’s a lively end to the session and always sparks a bit of friendly rivalry before heading back through the trees to the meeting point.
Sessions take place near Dunbar in East Lothian, within easy reach of Edinburgh at around a 40-minute drive. The range itself is tucked away in sheltered woodland, creating a quiet and focused environment away from busy public spaces. The short walk in adds to the sense of stepping into a dedicated outdoor arena.
East Lothian is known for its open coastline, farmland and rolling countryside, making it an ideal setting for outdoor activities year round. The woodland provides natural cover in changeable weather while still feeling open and spacious. Clear signage from the A1087 leads to the meeting point, with parking available on site.
No prior archery experience is needed, as full instruction is provided from the ground up. Participants should be comfortable standing for periods of time and walking a short distance to the range.
Outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear are essential, as sessions run in most weather conditions. In colder months, warm layers and a hat are recommended, while a waterproof jacket is advisable if rain is forecast.
The team brings extensive outdoor leadership experience and nationally recognised instructor qualifications, ensuring sessions are delivered to a high professional standard. Small group sizes allow for personalised coaching, helping each participant build confidence at their own pace.
Operating with a strong environmental ethos, the organisation prioritises sustainable practices and respect for the landscapes it works within. No experience is required at all. The session is designed to introduce complete beginners to the fundamentals, starting with safety, stance and basic shooting technique before progressing to longer distances.
Those who have tried archery before will still benefit from structured coaching and technical feedback. The instructor adapts the session to suit the ability level of the group, ensuring everyone is appropriately challenged.
Safety is the top priority throughout the session. You’ll receive a clear briefing before any shooting begins, covering range rules, safe handling of equipment and when to retrieve arrows.
The instructor supervises all shooting and controls the range at all times. With small group sizes and professional oversight, risks are carefully managed from start to finish.
Dress for the outdoors, as the range is set within woodland and sessions run in most weather. Sturdy footwear with good grip is recommended due to uneven ground.
Avoid loose scarves or bulky sleeves that may interfere with the bowstring. In cooler months, wear layers you can adjust as you warm up.
Beginners typically start at a shorter distance to build confidence and develop consistent technique. As accuracy improves, you’ll move back to shoot over 10 metres or more.
The adaptable layout means distances can be adjusted depending on the group’s ability and goals for the session.
The minimum age is 10 for standard sessions, although private bookings may allow younger participants depending on circumstances. The instructor ensures equipment and distances are suitable for younger archers.
Parents or guardians should remain on site during the session. Archery can be a great confidence-building activity for young people when delivered in a structured environment.
