Three days riding through one of Wales’ quietest and most untouched regions gives you a mix of moorland, forest, deep valleys and high routes with big views. This moderate, steady-paced route begins gently, builds toward a high and rewarding middle day, and finishes with a long, satisfying descent. The terrain includes long climbs, occasional steep sections and persistent gravel stretches, but distances remain manageable for riders with good fitness.
Remote landscapes, peaceful lanes and a few memorable wild swimming spots give this trip a strong sense of escape. With overnight stays in welcoming B&Bs and plenty of opportunities for café stops, the journey blends challenge with comfort and the space to enjoy the simple rhythm of travelling through West Wales by bike.
This is a self-guided route, with detailed navigation, full kit provision and backup support on hand should you need it.
This loop from Llandovery takes in the Tywi Valley, Dinefwr Estate, Brechfa Forest, the Sarn Helen Roman road, the Teifi Valley, the Cambrian moors and the dramatic shoreline of Llyn Brianne. Expect remote, exposed sections with very few shops between towns, alongside stretches of tranquil lanes, forest gravel and long moorland views.
Comfortable B&Bs, always within reach of a pub for dinner.
Meals are at your own expense, with many pubs and cafés along the route and recommendations provided. Breakfast is included with all B&B stays. A Moderate route suited to riders with good cardiovascular fitness. Expect:
The remoteness and limited resupply points increase the overall challenge despite modest daily mileage.
Regular riding helps significantly. If you’re not cycling often, build fitness through commuting, weekend rides or spin classes. Consistency is more important than intensity.
This trip captures the quieter side of West Wales, linking hidden valleys, moorland crossings, forest tracks and some of the region’s finest rural roads. Routes are designed to give you time to enjoy the scenery, stop for a swim or take a photo, while still offering a rewarding level of challenge. The planning, kit and support are taken care of so you can focus on the simple rhythm of riding through one of Wales’ most atmospheric landscapes.

Meet in Llandovery for your bike setup and kit briefing before setting off on a short climb that immediately opens into your first gravel section through Llwynywormwood. Quiet country lanes then roll gently toward Llandeilo, where the Tywi Valley widens and offers a relaxed stretch before lunch.
The route continues through the Dinefwr Castle Estate and across a brief hike-a-bike section leading back to tarmac. From here you follow the River Cothi upstream toward Brechfa, surrounded by woodland and rural farmland.

Begin with an easy warm-up along the valley floor before heading deep into Brechfa Forest on the first long gravel stretch of the day. As the trees thin, quiet cross-crossing lanes begin to rise gently, giving you steady height gain and wider horizons.
Reaching the Sarn Helen Roman road brings a shift to open moorland with big sky views toward the Cambrian Mountains and the distant Brecon Beacons. A long descent drops you into the Teifi Valley and on to Tregaron, your base for the evening.

A sharp climb out of Tregaron sets the tone for the day, but the reward comes quickly with a refreshing wild swim opportunity in a remote waterfall pool. Quiet lanes then guide you to Soar y Mynydd, often called the most remote chapel in Wales.
From here the route rises again to trace the outline of Llyn Brianne Reservoir, offering some of the finest road riding in the region with open views across the water. The final section descends gradually all the way back into Llandovery, with the option to explore the Gwenffrwd-Dinas Nature Reserve and Twm Sion Cati’s cave on the way.
You’ll carry all your kit, so prioritise light, packable items. A dry bag is provided and must hold everything for the trip.
Yes. A big part of bikepacking is travelling self-sufficiently. Everything you need fits into the bikepacking bags provided. Stick to the kit list, pack light, and you’ll be surprised how straightforward it is.
Carrying your own kit is part of what makes bikepacking so rewarding. We could move your bags for you, but it would take away the sense of independence and dilute the adventure. The challenge is part of the appeal, and most riders finish feeling proud of what they’ve achieved.
We provide Temple Cycles gravel bikes with high-quality components. They’re quick on the road, comfortable over rougher sections, and purpose-built for the type of mixed-terrain riding our routes involve.
You choose between B&Bs or camping.
We strongly suggest using the kit we provide. It’s chosen specifically for its low weight and packability, ensuring everything fits onto your bike. Bulkier personal gear often won’t fit.
There’s no strict maximum, but if your group is larger than eight, please contact us before booking so we can make the necessary arrangements.
Exact details vary by route and will be emailed to you beforehand. As a general guideline, please arrive at the start point in your cycling gear and ready for your briefing and bike fitting at 10am.
