Learn the basics of freediving in a relaxed, pool-based setting with the SSI Try Freediving programme. Perfect for beginners, this session introduces essential techniques, safety knowledge and breath-hold skills in a supportive environment, giving you a real feel for the sport before taking it further. All equipment is provided, so you can simply turn up, get in the water and enjoy the experience.
Your session starts with a warm welcome and an introduction to the fundamentals of freediving, covering safety considerations, breathing techniques and how to use the provided equipment correctly. You’ll learn about equalisation, streamlining your body in the water, and conserving oxygen through relaxed movement. The instructor will guide you through each step, ensuring you feel confident before moving into the practical element.
Once in the pool, you’ll begin in the shallow area to get comfortable with your mask, fins, snorkel and weights, practising correct breathing and breath-hold positions. Gradually, you’ll progress to deeper sections, with the opportunity to attempt a dive down to a maximum of 5 metres if you feel ready. The pace is adapted to your comfort level, and you can focus on building confidence and refining technique at your own speed. By the end, you’ll have gained a taste of what freediving involves, learned key safety practices, and have the satisfaction of achieving your first breath-hold dives.
Sessions take place at St Martins in Oswestry, a modern 25-metre pool with a depth of 3 metres at its deepest point. Its calm, indoor setting makes it an ideal place for beginners to learn freediving without the added variables of open water. The facilities are well maintained and offer a safe, controlled space for both the theory and practical parts of your training.
Oswestry itself sits close to the Welsh border, making it easily accessible from both North Wales and Shropshire. The area offers a friendly, community feel with nearby amenities, and its central location makes it convenient for those travelling from surrounding towns and cities for evening sessions.
Participants must be comfortable in the water and able to swim. No previous freediving or snorkelling experience is necessary, making this a great introduction for those curious about the sport.
A reasonable level of general fitness will help you get the most from the session, but the instructor will adapt the pace and exercises to suit your ability. All equipment is included, so there’s no need to bring specialist gear.
Led by an experienced freediving instructor who is also an active marine mammal medic, every session is guided with a strong focus on safety, encouragement and enjoyment. The instructor’s local knowledge and passion for the sea bring extra depth to the experience, making learning engaging and relatable.
The centre’s approach ensures you’re not just taught the basics, but also gain an appreciation for the wider freediving community and its connection to marine conservation. With small group sizes, quality instruction and all equipment included, it’s an easy and enjoyable way to try freediving for the first time.
