This practical course teaches the knowledge and techniques needed to control severe bleeding using tourniquets and haemostatic dressings, helping you respond confidently when every second matters.
During the session, you'll learn the principles behind catastrophic bleeding control and understand why early intervention can significantly improve outcomes. Training covers current guidance, recent rule changes and the decision-making process involved in choosing between tourniquets, haemostatic dressings and trauma dressings.
Practical instruction focuses on a range of commonly used tourniquets, including CAT, SOFT-T, MAT and SAM XT models. You'll learn how each device works, when it should be used and how to apply it correctly under pressure. The course also explores improvised tourniquets, situations where a second tourniquet may be required and the potential complications associated with incorrect use.
Attention then turns to haemostatic products and wound-packing techniques. Participants are introduced to products such as Celox Gauze, Celox A and other haemostatic agents, alongside practical guidance on packing wounds and managing casualties suffering from major blood loss. The course concludes with patient monitoring considerations, recognising shock and understanding what actions should be taken while awaiting emergency medical assistance.
