Catch the rolling waves of Pembrokeshire’s Atlantic coast and discover why Whitesands Beach is one of the best surf spots in Wales. With expert instructors, warm wetsuits, and beginner-friendly boards, these sessions are perfect for first-time surfers as well as those ready to step up their skills and tackle bigger waves.
When you arrive at the meeting point in St Davids, our team will get you signed in and kitted out with a wetsuit, board, and everything else you’ll need. From there, it’s a short trip to Whitesands Beach, a wide sandy bay framed by dramatic headlands and known for consistent surf.
The Discovery session begins with a beachside introduction to surfing, including how to handle your board, paddle efficiently, and practise safe techniques in the water. You’ll start by prone riding to gain confidence before learning to pop up and balance on your board. With plenty of time to practise and guidance at every stage, most people manage to ride their first wave during this session.
For those choosing the Explorer session, expect to spend less time on the basics and more time refining your skills in the surf. Instructors will help you improve turning, positioning, and manoeuvring, while also introducing more advanced techniques suited to faster, larger waves. The pace is more demanding but designed to push your surfing to the next level.
Whitesands Beach, on the tip of the St Davids Peninsula, is a Blue Flag beach with excellent water quality and reliable surf. Backed by rolling hills and set within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, it provides a safe and scenic setting to learn or progress. The beach is a favourite for spotting seabirds, and if you’re lucky, you might even see dolphins or seals offshore while you’re in the water.
The meeting point before each session is 20 High Street, St Davids, SA62 6SD, from where we’ll transport you to the beach with all your equipment.
Participants should be comfortable spending time in the water and have a basic level of fitness. Swimming ability is helpful, particularly for Explorer sessions, but beginners can still enjoy Discovery sessions in shallower conditions. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Surfing in Pembrokeshire isn’t just about learning a new sport — it’s about connecting with nature and experiencing the thrill of the Atlantic in a safe and supportive environment. For over 40 years, our instructors have helped thousands of people stand on their first wave, refine their technique, and build confidence in the sea.
We’re passionate about sustainability and respecting the coastline we work on. By choosing us, you’ll not only have a brilliant day in the surf but also join in our effort to protect one of the cleanest and most beautiful marine environments in Europe.
Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult, and those under 8 must book a private session via the adventuro chat below.
Groups can be doubled to 16 with an extra instructor.
All the essential equipment you need is supplied, including a wetsuit, helmet, and buoyancy aid. These are checked regularly to meet safety standards and ensure you are well-protected throughout the activity.
You’ll just need to bring swimwear, old trainers you don’t mind getting wet, and a towel for afterwards. If you wear glasses, it’s best to secure them with a strap or wear contact lenses.
You don’t need to be an expert swimmer, but you should feel comfortable in the water. Most sessions involve swimming short distances in buoyancy aids, which makes staying afloat easier.
Instructors are always close by to provide guidance and reassurance, and routes are chosen based on conditions and the ability of the group. If you are less confident, this will be taken into account when planning the activities.
Safety is always the highest priority. The instructors are fully trained, experienced, and qualified to lead groups in a range of sea conditions. They carry safety equipment and know the coastline well.
The activity is also tailored to the abilities of each group, meaning jumps and swims are always optional. You’ll never be asked to do something outside your comfort zone, and there are safe alternatives if you’d prefer not to take part in certain elements.
