Designed for confident paddlers looking to move beyond sheltered beginner sessions, these SUP adventure tours explore longer-distance coastal and open water routes around Cornwall. With guidance from experienced instructors throughout the trip, the session combines advanced paddling techniques, environmental awareness and scenic coastal exploration.
The session begins at the harbour base with a full safety briefing and trip overview before participants get fitted with wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets and paddling equipment. Those bringing their own kit are welcome to use it during the session following a quick equipment check by the guides. Before entering the water, the instructor discusses the planned route, weather conditions and coastal features expected during the tour.
Unlike beginner sessions held mainly within sheltered harbour water, this experience heads directly into more exposed ocean conditions and longer-distance coastal paddling routes. Depending on sea state and conditions on the day, the route may follow sections of Newquay’s coastline past caves, rocky inlets and hidden coves or move into estuary environments offering calmer wildlife-rich paddling. Throughout the journey, instructors provide ongoing coaching to improve paddling efficiency, confidence and control in moderate water conditions.
The session also introduces more advanced techniques including launching and landing through small surf, downwind paddling and reading changing ocean conditions. Regular stops allow time to take in the coastline, discuss environmental awareness and rest before continuing further along the route. Returning to shore, the group heads back to base for a debrief, showers and changing facilities after completing the tour.
Launching from Newquay Harbour gives quick access to both sheltered departure points and open ocean paddling routes depending on conditions. The surrounding coastline offers a wide variety of touring environments, from exposed coastal sections with caves and sea cliffs to calmer estuary systems filled with wildlife.
The flexibility of the local area allows instructors to choose the most suitable route each day based on tides, wind and swell. This helps create a safer and more enjoyable long-distance touring experience while still making the most of Cornwall’s coastline.
This session is not suitable for beginners. Participants should already paddle confidently in moderate conditions and have either completed a beginner SUP lesson or gained previous paddleboarding experience elsewhere.
A reasonable level of fitness is recommended due to the duration and open water conditions involved. Participants should also feel comfortable spending extended periods paddling in the ocean.
Using extensive experience in paddleboarding, coastal guiding and ocean safety, the team has developed advanced touring sessions designed to help paddlers progress beyond sheltered beginner conditions. Routes are adapted carefully around the group’s experience level and the sea conditions on the day, helping participants continue developing confidence and technique in open water.
Mel brings strong local knowledge and years of watersports experience, helping paddlers choose suitable sessions while ensuring groups feel supported throughout the tour. Operating from Newquay Harbour also allows access to a wide variety of coastal routes and paddling environments nearby.
No, this session is aimed at paddlers who already feel comfortable controlling a SUP in moderate water conditions. Participants should have previous paddleboarding experience before joining the tour.
