The Ötztal ski tour is a fantastic hut-to-hut adventure in the Austrian Alps, offering an incredible mix of ski touring, remote mountain terrain, and welcoming huts. Ideal for those looking to experience their first multi-day ski tour, this route is a great alternative to the more demanding options like the Haute Route. With shorter touring days, comfortable accommodation, and excellent descents, this is a rewarding introduction to the world of hut-to-hut ski touring. The journey takes you through a horseshoe-shaped route across impressive peaks, including Similaun, Fineil Spitze, and Wildspitze, the highest peak in the Ötztal region at 3,770m.
Day 1: Arrival in Innsbruck
On arrival, you’ll meet your guides and fellow skiers at the accommodation in Innsbruck for a welcome briefing. This is the perfect opportunity to go through any last-minute questions, check over equipment, and discuss the conditions in the mountains before the adventure begins.
Day 2: Vent to Martin Busch Hütte (2,501m)
The first ski day starts with a transfer to the village of Vent, the gateway to the Ötztal mountains. From here, the group skins up to the Martin Busch Hütte, a steady ascent that takes around three hours. Once at the hut, there’s time to settle in before heading out for an afternoon session covering basic avalanche safety and ski touring techniques, ensuring everyone is fully prepared for the days ahead.
Day 3: Hinter Schwarzen Joch (3,393m) and return to Martin Busch Hütte
The first full day in the mountains begins with a ski ascent of Hinter Schwarzen Joch at 3,393m. This provides a great opportunity to get used to the conditions and refine uphill and downhill techniques. The ascent is followed by a rewarding ski descent, and the group returns to the same hut for another night, making for a light and manageable day.
Day 4: Similaun (3,606m) and overnight at Similaun Hütte
The journey continues with a ski ascent of Mt Similaun, a 3,606m peak with a fantastic ski descent on the other side. This long but steady climb is rewarded with a well-earned break at the Similaun Hütte, where a warm meal and a cold drink await.
Day 5: Hauslabjoch (3,280m), Fineil Spitze (3,447m), and Hochjoch Hospiz
The route takes the group over the Hauslabjoch pass at 3,280m, followed by an ascent of Fineil Spitze at 3,447m. This double summit day offers a mix of climbing and skiing, with incredible views along the way. The ski descent leads towards the Hochjoch Hospiz hut, where the group rests for the night.
Day 6: Fluchtkogel (3,500m) and Vernagt Hütte
A long but steady ascent leads to the summit of Fluchtkogel at 3,500m, where the climb is rewarded with another excellent ski descent. The journey continues to the Vernagt Hütte, a remote but welcoming hut offering a warm atmosphere and well-earned rest after a full day in the mountains.
Day 7: Wildspitze (3,770m) and return to Innsbruck
The final big challenge is the ascent of Wildspitze, standing at 3,770m. As the highest peak in the region, this is the most demanding day, requiring an early start and steady progress. Reaching the summit is a real achievement, and the descent from here back to Vent is a fitting way to conclude the ski tour. Once in Vent, the group transfers back to Innsbruck for a well-earned celebration and a final night in the hotel.
Day 8: Departure from Innsbruck
After a comfortable night’s sleep, the adventure officially comes to an end with breakfast at the hotel before everyone departs for home.
The Ötztal Alps are located in the Tyrol region of Austria, offering excellent access to some of the most scenic and well-preserved mountain terrain in the Alps. The starting point for the tour is Innsbruck, a city that serves as the perfect gateway to the mountains.
The route follows a hut-to-hut format, covering a wide horseshoe-shaped circuit with varying terrain, including glacier travel, open slopes, and technical ascents. While this area sees fewer visitors than some of the more famous ski touring regions, it provides a rewarding experience for those looking to escape busier routes.
The trip includes a mix of comfortable hotel stays and traditional mountain huts. The first and last nights are spent in Innsbruck in a well-located hotel, providing a relaxing start and end to the adventure. The hotel offers twin or triple rooms, with single rooms available on request. Guests can enjoy a wellness area and an excellent restaurant for meals, with breakfast included. The first evening also features a welcome dinner, allowing the group to meet and prepare for the trip ahead.
During the ski tour, accommodation is in a selection of mountain huts, including Martin Busch Hütte, Similaun Hütte, Hochjoch Hospiz Hütte, and Vernagt Hütte. These traditional huts provide shared dormitory-style sleeping arrangements, warm meals, and a welcoming atmosphere. While basic, they are well-equipped for ski tourers, offering hearty food and a chance to rest before the next day’s adventures. The huts provide half-board accommodation, with breakfast and dinner included. While there is no Wi-Fi in the huts, the experience of staying in these remote locations is a key part of the trip, providing a true mountain experience.
To fully enjoy this tour, participants should have previous ski touring experience, at least at an introductory level. You should be confident skiing in a range of off-piste conditions, including deep snow, variable terrain, and icy slopes. Fitness is also an important factor, as the tour involves sustained effort over six days, with daily ascents ranging from 600m to 1,100m.
A good level of endurance is required, as well as the ability to carry a small pack with personal gear. If you are unsure about your ability level, it’s best to get in touch to discuss your experience before booking.
