An accessible shore dive on Madeira’s volcanic east coast, ideal for certified divers looking for a relaxed start to their diving holiday. Enter the water just steps from the marina and explore rocky formations, caves, and reef life in protected conditions.
After check-in and equipment setup, you’ll receive a site briefing covering entry point, dive profile, navigation route, and marine life likely to be encountered. The shore entry is straightforward, making this a suitable option for divers who prefer a gentle first dive of their trip.
The dive takes place along volcanic rock formations shaped by Madeira’s geological history. Swim-throughs, small caves, and reef structures provide varied terrain within a maximum depth of around 15 metres. This controlled depth range allows for extended bottom time and a relaxed pace.
Marine life frequently includes octopus, moray eels, juvenile groupers, trumpet fish, garden eels, rays, cuttlefish, and occasional barracuda. The site works well for both recently certified divers and experienced divers seeking an easy orientation dive before progressing to deeper boat dives.
Diving takes place at Ponta de São Lourenço on Madeira’s eastern peninsula. The area is known for its volcanic landscape both above and below the surface, with rugged rock structures continuing underwater.
The meeting point is located at Quinta do Lorde Marina in Caniçal, providing direct access to the house reef without the need for boat travel. Public transport access is available, and full joining instructions are provided after booking.
Participants must hold a recognised Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent) and must have been diving within the last 12 months.
If you have not dived recently, a refresher programme is required before joining this dive. A standard diving medical declaration applies.
This shore dive is structured and guided with a maximum 6:1 diver-to-guide ratio, ensuring clear briefings and attentive supervision. It’s a practical and well-managed introduction to the local conditions.
Direct access from the marina allows efficient preparation and relaxed entry, making it a reliable first dive option before progressing to deeper or boat-based sites around the island.
