Explore Madeira’s eastern coastline by speedboat before snorkelling in the protected waters of Ponta de São Lourenço. This guided experience combines coastal exploration with relaxed surface swimming in clear Atlantic conditions.
The trip begins with a safety and site briefing at the marina before boarding a speedboat and heading along the eastern coastline. The route passes beneath steep volcanic cliffs and exposed rock formations shaped by erosion over thousands of years. The boat ride itself is part of the experience, offering a coastal perspective not accessible by land.
Once conditions are assessed, the boat stops at a selected snorkelling site known for clear visibility and varied rock structures. A certified guide accompanies the group in the water, pointing out marine life and explaining the geological features below the surface. Expect to see reef fish, rocky reef habitats, and the distinctive volcanic formations typical of this peninsula.
The area has been protected since 1982, helping preserve marine biodiversity. While snorkelling, you may observe small schooling fish and coastal species, and on rare occasions even spot larger wildlife in the distance. After snorkelling, there is time to relax onboard before returning to the marina.
Ponta de São Lourenço is Madeira’s easternmost peninsula and a designated nature reserve. Its exposed volcanic landscape continues underwater, creating interesting reef formations and habitat diversity.
Departure is from Quinta do Lorde Marina in Caniçal, located close to the snorkelling sites. This reduces travel time and maximises time in the water.
