If you’re an experienced powerboater ready to share your skills, this 4-day instructor course is ideal. You’ll learn teaching methods and techniques to deliver the RYA Level 1 and 2 syllabus confidently, and gain hands-on experience running sessions under the guidance of an RYA Powerboat Trainer. The course includes the compulsory pre-skills assessment so you leave fully prepared to instruct others.
The course begins with the RYA Powerboat Pre-Skills Assessment, which checks your competence in boat handling and safety skills. You’ll receive personalised guidance on areas to focus on before moving on to teaching practice.
Over the following three days, you’ll lead multiple training sessions with feedback from your trainer. You’ll practice delivering the syllabus for both Level 1 and Level 2 courses, using different coaching techniques to suit a variety of learners. Sessions cover launching, berthing, man overboard drills, and fleet handling, ensuring you’re prepared to teach all practical elements effectively.
By the final day, you’ll demonstrate your teaching and leadership skills across a range of exercises. Instructors provide detailed feedback, helping you refine your methods and giving you the confidence to take on real learners in future courses.
Poole Harbour provides ideal conditions for both practising your own skills and teaching others. Sheltered waters allow controlled learning environments, while tidal areas offer realistic challenges to prepare you for instructing in varied conditions.
The area is well-equipped to support intensive instructor training, with easy access to launch points and open-water areas. You’ll benefit from a setting that allows seamless transition between practical coaching, demonstration, and feedback sessions.
You must be 16 or older and already competent in powerboat handling, including high-speed manoeuvres and man overboard procedures. Experience with RYA Level 1 and 2 content is highly recommended.
Bring suitable clothing for wet and windy conditions. All boats, safety equipment, and course materials are provided, but gloves, hats, or sunglasses may make practical sessions more comfortable.
Experienced RYA trainers guide you through all elements of instructing, combining practical expertise with proven coaching techniques. You’ll gain personalised feedback on your teaching style and technical skills throughout the course.
The programme emphasises safety, confidence, and structured skill development. Completing it ensures you are fully prepared to teach RYA Level 1 and 2 courses, with a clear understanding of lesson planning, learner management, and assessment procedures in both sheltered and open-water conditions.
