In a medical emergency, especially on the water or in remote locations, knowing how to act quickly can save lives. The RYA First Aid Course is a practical, one-day course designed to provide you with essential first aid knowledge tailored to boating and marine environments. It’s ideal for skippers and crew of yachts and motor vessels, and it meets the requirements for skippers operating within 60 miles of a safe haven. The course is based on the Health and Safety Executive and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) guidelines and is valid for three years.
This course covers a wide range of essential first aid topics, all with a focus on "on the water" scenarios. You’ll learn how to respond to various medical emergencies that might occur aboard small craft, including:
Our course combines hands-on practice with theory, ensuring you gain the practical skills and confidence to handle real-life emergencies.
The course is held at our training centre in Newark, Nottinghamshire, providing a comfortable classroom setting with all necessary equipment for both theory and practical sessions. We also offer the option to run the course at your location for groups, businesses, or government organisations.
No previous first aid experience is required, making this course suitable for beginners or as a refresher for those looking to renew their first aid certification.
As an official RYA-recognised training centre, we provide a high standard of instruction with small class sizes (maximum 8:1 ratio) to ensure personalised attention. Our instructors have extensive experience and deliver the course in a friendly, supportive environment. We offer flexible course dates and can arrange tailored sessions for groups or commercial organisations. With a focus on real-life, boating-specific scenarios, our course ensures you leave feeling confident in your ability to respond to emergencies at sea.
Note: This course requires a minimum number of participants to run. If the minimum number isn’t met, we will reschedule or offer you a full refund. Custom course dates can be arranged for groups.
