Natural pools at Sinagoga are the finish of this 4-hour Santo Antão hike, after a high start in Pinhao about 600 metres above the sea. Hotel pickup puts you on that inland trail. Valley farms and a coastal swim when the weather allows sit on the same path.
Pinhao is a small village where streams cut through hills and settlements follow the green valley floors. The path crosses those streams and hills, passing stone and straw houses set among plots, then reaches Lombo Branco, a farming village where people work with cows, goats, horses and donkeys. Endemic plants and tropical birds sit along the same slopes. The trail is challenging, with a few hours on your feet, so hiking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water matter.
Sinagoga lies closer to the coast and takes its name from the Jewish community that settled there after leaving Portugal. If conditions are kind, the last stop is a swim in the natural pools before the drive back to your hotel. Pack a swimsuit if you want that finish. Starting high and ending at sea level keeps the half day varied without using the busiest crater trail.
Pinhao sits inland at about 600 metres, where small streams cut through hills and settlements follow the green valley floors. Houses of stone and straw sit among plots, and the path keeps you among people who live on the slopes rather than on a bare ridge.
Lombo Branco is a farming village with livestock and endemic plants, plus small and medium tropical birds. Sinagoga lies closer to the coast. The natural pools sit at the end of the walk, so you arrive ready to swim rather than starting at sea level and climbing.
Stream crossings, hills and a few hours on your feet make this trail challenging, so bring water, hiking shoes, a hat and sunscreen. The shared rate at checkout is for guests aged 16 to 99. Groups can include up to 15 walkers.
Pack a swimsuit if you want to use the Sinagoga pools. Public transport runs nearby, but hotel pickup is already included so you do not need to reach Pinhao on your own.
Guides on Santo Antão choose this lesser-known line when guests want valleys and a coastal swim rather than the busiest crater trail. Hotel pickup and drop-off mean you can stay in Porto Novo or along the north coast and still join without hiring a car.
Starting high in Pinhao and finishing at the pools keeps the walking varied in a single half day. The last stop at Sinagoga is timed so there is a chance to swim when the weather allows.
The trail starts in Pinhao, a small village about 600 metres above sea level. Hotel pickup is included, so we collect you from your accommodation and drive you to that start rather than asking you to find the valley on your own.
The finish is at Sinagoga and the natural swimming pools on the coast. A drop-off then returns you to your hotel. Share your stay when you book so the driver can plan both ends.
This is a challenging trail. You cross small streams and hills, lose height toward the coast, and stay on your feet for about four hours. The ground is uneven and can be wet after rain.
This is a shorter day than the Ponta do Sol coastal route, but the surface and stream crossings still ask for hiking shoes and a steady pace. It is not a gentle village stroll.
The natural swimming pools at Sinagoga are the last stop, and you can take a dip when the weather and sea allow. Your guide decides on the day. Bring a swimsuit and a small towel if you want that option.
A rough swell or wind can close the pools even after a clear walk inland. The village visit still happens if the water is off limits.
Lombo Branco is a farming village where you may see cows, goats, horses and donkeys around the houses. Endemic plants and small to medium tropical birds are part of the same stretch.
Your guide points out the plots and the stone and straw houses along the green valleys. It is a working settlement, so stay on the path and give livestock space.
Sinagoga was home to a Jewish community that settled on Santo Antão after being expelled from Portugal. The name remains even though that community is no longer there. Your guide explains the story as you arrive from Lombo Branco.
The natural pools sit beside this coastal hamlet, so the history stop and the swim share the same end of the walk. Public transport runs nearby if you want to return another day.
The shared rate at checkout is labelled for guests aged 16 to 99, so treat that as the usual booking band unless a private arrangement is agreed. The trail is challenging, with streams and hills, so it suits walkers who already hike rather than very young children.
Write to us if your group includes younger guests and you want an honest view of the stream crossings and the descent toward the pools. Hiking shoes and a steady pace matter more than speed.
Groups run from one guest to a maximum of 15. That is larger than some of the island's smaller treks, so expect a sociable shared departure on busy dates.
If you want fewer people on the streams and at the pools, ask about a private date. The calendar shows how many places remain.
Hiking shoes, a hat, sunscreen and water are the essentials. Add a swimsuit and towel if you hope to use the Sinagoga pools, plus a dry bag for the stream crossings after rain.
Food is not included on this half day, so bring a snack. We return you to the hotel afterward, so you can eat a larger meal once you are back.
Pickup from your accommodation is included. Many guests stay in Porto Novo or along the north coast, and we collect from the hotel you name when you book. Confirm the address so the driver can plan the run to Pinhao.
Flights and the ferry or flight onto Santo Antão are not included. Once you are checked in on the island, we handle the day's road transfers.
We'll charge a 100% cancellation fee if you cancel 2 days or less before the Pinhao walk. The fee is 50% if you cancel 6 days or less before, and 0% if you cancel up to 1000 days before the event.
Update your stay if it changes, and contact us early if you need another date so the driver can still reach you for the run to Pinhao.
