Kayak upstream to Sapinya Island on a relaxed, pet friendly self-guided route through one of the Ebro Delta’s most delicate river environments. Calm waters, rich vegetation and a steady pace make this an engaging route for confident beginners and families with older children. The journey finishes back at the pier in Riu a l’Ebre after around two hours on the water.
Your experience begins in Riu a l’Ebre, with a short transfer to the launch point near Balada, a quiet riverside area opposite Sapinya Island. Before setting off, staff provide clear advice on the route, paddling technique and how to manage the kayak comfortably with a pet on board. Life jackets and paddles are issued, and time is given to settle into the kayak before starting the upstream section.
The first part of the route involves a steady paddle upriver, taking around half an hour to reach Sapinya Island. As you approach, dense willow and poplar groves line the banks, creating a feeling of entering a protected natural space. The island itself is small but biologically rich, home to more than 130 plant species and serving as an important winter resting area for herons, cormorants and other birds.
After circling Sapinya Island, the route turns downstream, offering a gentler paddle towards Gracia Island. The right bank is recommended for the most scenic views, with wide river sections and quiet stretches ideal for relaxed paddling. The route concludes back at the Riu a l’Ebre pier, having combined light physical effort with wildlife observation and time on the water with your pet.
