From Horton in Ribblesdale you climb Pen-y-ghent taking in exciting scramble lines, exposure coaching, and optional roped crag work or a Hull Pot visit when conditions allow. The route blends hill walking with hands-on rock scrambling for a genuine mountain adventure.
As a full mountain day, your guide paces the ascent carefully with regular food stops, route briefings, and open chats about height confidence. You will learn movement over steep limestone and enjoy panoramic vistas across Ribblesdale and the Three Peaks.
The Three Peaks landscape surrounding Horton in Ribblesdale provides a genuine mountain atmosphere with dramatic limestone scarps, dry valleys, and wide open fell views. Instructors choose ascent and scramble lines that match the weather forecast and group experience.
Parking, rail links, and public amenities are located in Horton village. We send detailed parking advice, meet times, and seasonal kit reminders well before you travel so your journey runs smoothly.
Suitable for ages 12 and over with an accompanying adult; you should have good walking fitness and be comfortable carrying a daypack on sustained hill gradients. No technical rock climbing background is required.

You need hill fitness for a full mountain day carrying a rucksack. Tell us about joint issues or height confidence when booking so we can tune the scramble lines.
Your fee covers a qualified mountain instructor for the guided route, group safety kit for any roped sections, and coaching on movement, scrambling and abseil technique.
Transport to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, parking, food and personal hill clothing are not included.
We meet at Horton-in-Ribblesdale car park at the published time. Grid references and parking payment guidance are emailed before your date.
Allow extra time for kit checks and the steady walk-in toward Pen y Ghent on moorland paths.
Hill boots, waterproof jacket and trousers, warm layers, hat and gloves even in summer, plus a head torch and whistle. Carry a full daypack with lunch, snacks and at least two litres of water.
Walking poles are optional. Personal medication and any knee supports should be packed where you can reach them on the move.
Expect a full day on steep moorland with hands-on scrambling sections and exposure on the upper mountain. Fitness matters more than climbing grades.

No prior roped climbing is needed for the coached sections. Harnesses and helmets are fitted on the day with clear calls taught before anyone leaves the ground.
Indoor wall experience can help you relax on the abseil, but many guests try outdoor ropework for the first time on this route.
