The Paddlesport Touring Leader Training course is a comprehensive programme designed for individuals who wish to lead mixed crafts on moderate inland waters. The training, conducted by Rock The Boat Activities, spans over 2 to 5 days, focusing on developing your leadership and group management skills, personal paddling techniques, rescue skills, and theoretical knowledge. By the end of the course, you will be equipped to independently lead safe and enjoyable paddling trips or be deployed by clubs, centres, or organisations.
The become certified, you will need to attend a follow-on one-day assessment. This is another practical, on-the-water day, where you will be assessed against the Paddle UK Paddlesport Touring Leader criteria and receive your certification upon successful completion.
There are no formal personal performance or safety award prerequisites to enrol in the Paddlesport Touring Leader Training. However, to maximise your learning experience, you should be comfortable in or on your craft and able to independently paddle on open water and rivers up to Grade 2. It is also recommended that you hold a personal performance award in your chosen discipline, such as the Progressive White Water Award, Progressive Canoe Award, or Stand Up Paddleboard White Water Award. Experience in these environments is beneficial before attending the training.
The course is designed to equip you with a range of essential skills for leading paddling trips on moderate inland waters. Key areas of focus include:
Preparation for the course involves ensuring you are comfortable and competent in your paddling abilities. You should be able to independently paddle on open water and navigate rivers up to Grade 2. Familiarising yourself with the eLearning resources available can also be beneficial. These optional, interactive eLearning packages cover key principles such as the British Canoeing Awarding Body Model of Leadership, leading in unfamiliar environments, and leading mixed craft journeys. Additionally, having some experience and possibly a personal performance award in your chosen discipline will enhance your readiness for the training.
