Learn to ride a trials bike in the hills of Whitewell on a full-day, beginner-friendly experience. Whether you’ve ridden off-road before or only stuck to the tarmac, this hands-on session builds your skills and confidence on varied, tailored terrain under expert guidance.
The day starts with sign-in, a gear fitting, and a short safety video. After meeting your instructor, you’ll be matched with a bike that suits your height, weight, and riding background. The morning focuses on flat, open ground where you’ll learn throttle control, braking, and body positioning before moving onto introductory sections designed to build confidence and technique.
Midday, you’ll return to base for a homemade hot lunch before heading back out for another two hours of riding. The afternoon often introduces slightly more challenging sections, tailored to the group’s ability. These purpose-built areas include flagged obstacles, gentle inclines, and varied surfaces, allowing you to practise your new skills in a safe but realistic environment. The session wraps up with a drink and informal debrief.
Electric bikes offer adjustable power modes so you can progress at your own pace, while petrol models such as Beta and Montesa provide the feel of traditional trials riding. Whichever you choose, the focus is on steady progression, supportive coaching, and making the experience both fun and rewarding.
Based in Whitewell in the Forest of Bowland AONB, this location offers rolling countryside, open grassy fields, and scenic woodland tracks—ideal for learning trials riding in a safe and unpressured setting. The peaceful rural surroundings provide plenty of space to practise without distractions.
The venue has dedicated training fields and section areas all close to the central base, where you’ll return for lunch and breaks. Facilities include undercover areas for changing, refreshments, and friendly on-site support throughout the day.
No previous trials experience is necessary, but you must be able to ride a bicycle or motorcycle confidently and have good balance. This session is not suitable for complete non-riders.
Participants under 18 must have a parent or guardian on-site for the duration. Suitable clothing should be worn under the provided riding gear, and riders using the supplied bikes must be able to manage the weight and height of the machine safely.
This full-day format offers the time needed to learn the fundamentals, build skills progressively, and enjoy plenty of riding in a supportive setting. Instructors are skilled trials riders with extensive teaching experience, ensuring the day is engaging and tailored to your needs.
With a range of well-maintained electric and petrol bikes, you can choose the setup that suits your style and experience level. Adjustable power settings, clutch or non-clutch options, and varied terrain make it a complete introduction to the sport, all delivered with a friendly, professional approach.
Level 1 is ideal for those who’ve ridden a road bike or scooter but have never tried trials or off-road riding. It starts right from the basics—how to stand correctly on the pegs, throttle control, balance and brake use—on flat, forgiving terrain. You’ll progress steadily through basic riding skills under the guidance of an instructor.
Level 2 suits riders who’ve had some off-road experience already—such as motocross or enduro—but are new to trials. The day still covers trials fundamentals but may move slightly quicker, with more time spent on obstacle-based sections. The riding will still be controlled and tailored to your group, but you’ll likely take on more terrain challenges earlier in the day.
Yes – you can choose from a range of electric and petrol trials bikes. Electric bikes like the EM Epure are great for beginners, especially those coming from mountain biking backgrounds, as they don’t require gear changes or clutch control (unless you opt for a higher-spec model). The power delivery is smooth, and settings can be adjusted to suit you.
Petrol bikes like the Beta Evo and Montesa 4RT offer a more traditional trials experience. They are geared and use a clutch, so they suit riders who are used to motorcycles. These bikes are kick-start only and a little more technical to manage, so they’re recommended if you’re already comfortable with basic bike mechanics and controls.
No motorcycle licence is needed to join the session. The training takes place entirely on private land and under supervision, so it’s accessible to anyone aged 12 and over with basic bike handling skills. The focus is on learning trials-specific techniques, not riding on public roads.
However, you should already know how to ride a pushbike or motorcycle and be confident with balance and steering. If you’ve never ridden any sort of two-wheeled vehicle before, this isn’t the right introduction, and you may want to consider other beginner options first.
The minimum age for participants is 12. Riders under 18 will need a parent or guardian to stay on-site for the entire session, as per training guidelines. All riders must be physically capable of handling the size and weight of the bike they’re using.
There’s no upper age limit as long as you're in good health and have enough strength and mobility to ride for a couple of hours. The team is very experienced in working with all ages and can adjust the session to accommodate different fitness levels and confidence.
You don’t need to be super fit or particularly strong, but you do need enough stamina to be on your feet for a few hours and able to move around on the bike. Trials riding is surprisingly low-speed, so there’s no high-speed racing or big jumps, but you’ll still be using your legs and core throughout the day.
Each session includes regular breaks, and the pace is tailored to the group. The full-day option includes a lunch break, and your instructor will always keep an eye on how everyone’s doing.
If you’re hiring gear, you’ll be provided with a helmet, gloves, trials jersey, trials trousers, and proper boots. The kit is designed specifically for trials riding and offers plenty of movement and protection. However, there are size limits for the hire gear: jersey up to 46” chest, trousers up to 40” waist, boots up to EU50, and helmets up to 63cm.
You’ll need to wear your own base layers underneath, and it’s worth bringing a spare set of clothes in case of bad weather. If you fall outside the kit sizing, or prefer your own protective gear, you’re welcome to bring it along—just make sure it’s suitable for off-road riding.
If you're hiring everything, just bring a sense of adventure and appropriate clothing for the weather. That includes warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy socks if you're using hire boots. You should also bring a water bottle and snacks if you’d like extras between sessions.
If you’re bringing your own bike, you’ll need to ensure it’s in good working order and suitable for trials. The instructors will check all BYOB bikes on arrival to ensure they’re safe for use. Also, don’t forget your damage waiver (optional), waterproof hire money if needed, and ID for the registration process.
