If you’ve mastered top rope climbing, it’s time to elevate your skills and learn to lead climb! Our two-session course is designed to give you the knowledge and confidence to climb on lead, with a focus on essential techniques like lead belaying, clipping quickdraws, and climbing safely.
In the first session, you'll be introduced to the fundamentals of lead climbing, including how to belay for a lead climber and the correct way to clip into quickdraws. This session will also cover the basics of fall practice, ensuring you’re comfortable and prepared. Between sessions, you’ll have time to practise these skills independently, building your confidence and technique.
The second session will focus on consolidating what you’ve learned, with more advanced techniques and scenarios. You'll have the opportunity to lead climb under supervision, receiving personalised feedback and guidance to refine your skills. The course ensures you leave feeling ready to lead climb safely and with confidence.
Our sessions take place at our indoor climbing centre in North Devon, featuring a state-of-the-art bouldering cave and a variety of routes suitable for all levels.

To join this course, you must have prior experience with top rope climbing.
You should be comfortable climbing indoors and belaying others. If you’re not yet familiar with top rope climbing, we recommend taking an introductory course first.
Top rope climbing involves climbing with the rope already in place above you, whereas lead climbing involves attaching the rope to quickdraws as you climb, with the rope only above you once you clip it in.
Lead climbing offers more freedom of movement but also involves higher risks, such as potential falls.
This course is a great starting point, providing you with all the essential skills for lead climbing. The two 2-hour sessions are designed to give you the core skills and confidence to climb on lead safely.
Depending on your progression, you might want to take additional practice sessions or courses to further refine your skills.
You are welcome to bring your own climbing shoes if you have them, but they are not mandatory.
The centre provides all necessary climbing equipment, including shoes, harnesses, ropes, and belay devices. If you prefer using your own shoes, they are welcome.
Yes, fall practice is an essential part of the course, and we ensure it’s done safely under expert supervision. You’ll practice falling in a controlled environment, which will help build your confidence.
Your instructor will guide you through each step to ensure you're comfortable.
