Time on the lake and time in the hot springs are brought together in this private full-day tour from San Jose. The experience focuses on gentle adventure through kayaking on open volcanic waters, followed by a relaxed afternoon in geothermal pools surrounded by rainforest scenery.
The morning begins with private pickup from San Jose, followed by a drive through changing landscapes as you head towards the Arenal region. On arrival at Lake Arenal, your guide provides a full safety briefing and paddling instruction before heading out onto the water. The kayaking section lasts around two hours, following calm open stretches of lake with surrounding rainforest and occasional views of the Arenal Volcano depending on weather conditions.
Once the lake section is complete, travel continues by private vehicle to the hot springs area. Lunch is served on arrival, after which the afternoon is left open for you to move between thermal pools and relaxation areas. Different pools offer varying temperatures, and the setting allows for a slower pace before the return journey to San Jose later in the day.
Lake Arenal sits within one of Costa Rica’s most recognisable volcanic regions, shaped by past eruptions and ongoing geothermal activity. The lake is the largest in the country and is surrounded by forested hills, farmland and protected natural areas.
The hot springs are located nearby at the base of the volcano, where geothermal water is channelled into a network of pools. These are set within landscaped tropical gardens, creating a natural contrast between rainforest, water and volcanic terrain.
No previous kayaking experience is required as full instruction is provided before entering the lake. The guide remains with the group throughout to offer support and direction during the session.
A reasonable level of fitness is recommended due to two hours of continuous paddling. Participants should also be comfortable getting in and out of a kayak from the lakeshore.
Private itineraries are designed to give space between activities, allowing each part of the day to be experienced without rush or large group scheduling. This keeps the focus on enjoying both the lake and hot springs at a comfortable pace.
Guides provide support throughout the entire day, from kayaking instruction to coordination at the hot springs. The combination of calm water exploration and geothermal bathing creates a varied but easygoing experience in one of Costa Rica’s most scenic regions.
