Transition from indoor leading to bolted outdoor routes on a two-day learn to lead sport course for climbers aged 14 plus. You will climb Yorkshire limestone with coaching on clipping, movement, falling practice and crag safety.
Make the leap from indoor lead climbing to bolted outdoor crags on a focused two-day sport climbing course for teenagers aged 14 and above. Your instructor coaches you through clipping techniques from stable stances, rope management around quickdraws, thread belay setups, and safe lower-off procedures.
Coached sessions include controlled falling practice and active belaying in a safe, controlled environment, helping demystify the fear of falling on lead. You will gain the confidence to read outdoor rock, plan rest positions, and safely clean sport anchors at the top of routes.
The course runs on bolted Yorkshire limestone crags such as Giggleswick South, Castleberg Quarry, or Robin Proctor Scar, which offer high-quality bolted routes across beginner and intermediate grades. Instructors select sectors with flat bases and modern, reliable bolt protection.
We confirm the exact parking area, approach instructions, and meet times well before the first morning. Approaches can involve short, steep trails, so supportive approach shoes or trainers are required.
Competent indoor lead climbing at F5 or above and confident lead belaying. Prior outdoor top-rope or seconding experience helps.
Candidates must demonstrate the maturity and focus required for outdoor lead belaying. Please let us know when booking of any medical conditions or specific support needs.
Youth sport-lead days are coached by instructors who run school and club programmes locally, so the tone is supportive while standards on bolts and belays stay strict.
All sessions are led by certified Mountain Training professionals holding current outdoor first aid and enhanced DBS checks. Small group sizes ensure each climber gets extensive route mileage and direct coaching on clipping and belaying safety.
Meet at Malham area meeting point, Malham, Skipton BD23 4DJ. Allow extra time for moorland or crag approaches from the car park.
We send final directions, parking details and arrival time before your session.
Teen climbers aged 14 to 17 who clip bolts confidently indoors or on outdoor trips and want a coached weekend leading bolted routes on Yorkshire limestone or grit.
Kids Rock Skills Intermediate or regular outdoor climbing with quickdraw experience is the usual starting point before this course, and guardians should expect a full weekend of focused coaching rather than a casual taster day.
Two days of sport-lead coaching, shared ropes and teaching quickdraws, and structured mock leads through to supervised leads on suitable grades.
Personal climbing shoes, harness, helmet and your own quickdraws are not included in the fee, and you should pack lunch, water and transport to the crag each morning. We email the kit list again when your place is confirmed.
Bolted venues are selected for youth-friendly grades and access. Guardians get meet instructions, parking advice and pick-up times in the week before the course.
Arrive with full kit both mornings because there is no kit storage at remote crag car parks, and plan pick-up at the published finish time unless we message about a weather delay.
Harness, helmet, shoes and a full set of quickdraws if they have them, plus lunch, water and weather layers for full days outside.
Encourage them to practise clipping with their dominant hand before the weekend so drills feel familiar on real rock, and label personal kit if they borrow gear between sessions.
Strong top-rope and seconding outdoors, plus recent clipping practice on a wall or with a club. Coaches run belay and clipping checks before anyone leads.
If experience is mostly indoor, share on-sight grades when booking so we confirm this is the right course and choose limestone sectors that match their head game.
Book on Adventuro and complete parental consent and emergency contacts before the first day. Payment confirms the place once ratios are secure for that weekend.
Holiday sport-lead dates fill quickly, so enquire about waiting lists if your preferred weekend is already full when you apply.
Light rain on some bolted sectors is manageable; electrical storms or sustained downpours mean we pause or move to a sheltered area. Safety decisions are explained to the group on the day.
We contact guardians if we cancel before travel so you can rearrange plans, and we never push sharp-end leads when lightning or storm-force wind threatens the crag.
Many teens lead at least one bolted pitch after successful mock leads and falling practice. Grade choice stays conservative and coaches can lower from above if needed.
Progression is individual; some learners spend both days on mock leads and clipping drills if that builds safer habits, and that is welcomed when it produces better long-term judgement.
Youth-qualified instructors keep ratios low, use backup belays where appropriate and review fall practice on safe terrain before sharp-end leads.
Medical and consent forms are kept confidential and available to lead staff on the crag, and any concerns can be raised with the course director on the day.
Cancellation fees follow the UK tiers published on this booking page. Give as much notice as you can when illness or exams clash with the weekend so we can offer the place to another family.
We will try to move your teen to another sport-lead date when instructor capacity allows, subject to the notice rules stated on this page.
