Brentford Lock is located in west London at the point where the Grand Union Canal meets the River Brent. This stretch of water is part of a calm, lock-controlled network that’s ideal for relaxed paddling, free from tidal flow and powered boat traffic. The canal weaves past moored houseboats, restored industrial buildings, and leafy towpaths, offering a unique view of the area from the water.
Surrounded by a mix of nature and city life, it’s a place where you can see herons and coots along the reeds one minute and stop for coffee at a local café the next. Brentford itself has a growing reputation for its riverside charm, with waterside pubs, small shops and historic features like the old gauging lock and the nearby Brentford Dock. The area is also well-connected — just a short walk from Brentford station and close to several bus routes — making it easy to access for a quick paddle or a longer outing.
No prior experience is necessary, but participants must be water confident and able to follow safety instructions. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. All necessary kit is provided, and you’ll receive a safety briefing before heading out.

No prior experience is required for any of our paddlecraft rentals. All of our equipment is designed to be stable and easy to use, making it suitable for beginners as well as those with some paddling experience.
Before you set off, our team will provide a thorough safety briefing, explaining how to properly use the craft, basic paddling techniques, and what to do in case of an emergency. If you have any questions or concerns, we’ll be happy to assist you and ensure you're confident and comfortable on the water.
You can take a bag with you, provided it isn’t too large and it is splash-proof. Dry bags are ideal!
We do not have lockers on site but personal belongings in a bag/rucksack can be left in the equipment cages on-site. Make sure you do not leave loose items – it’s best to put them in one or two bags. Shoes can be left on site too. We have never had anything go missing but avoid bringing valuables (or take them in a drybag) as the cages are shared by staff and all customers.
We highly recommend cycling to the site. There are cycle stands nearby. Bring a lock with you. Folded Brompton bikes can be left in the equipment cages.
We would love it if you chose to cycle or walk as these are the best options for the environment, but here are all of your options to choose from:
Dogs are welcome by arrangement, but not on group sessions. You’re welcome to bring your dog on a private session or when hiring equipment. If you do, they must wear a properly fitted buoyancy aid—ideally one with a sturdy top handle to help you lift them from the water if needed.
Taking a dog on the water without a buoyancy aid puts them at serious risk. Wet fur becomes extremely slippery, making it very difficult to lift a dog safely. Never attempt to pull a dog out by its collar.
Once you're on the board it's fine. Just be careful not to fall in and make sure you bring aqua shoes!! The water is gross. However the scenery is pretty beautiful and its very peaceful and cool to see all the boats. The venue where you pick up your equipment…
