Scrambling offers an exciting mix of hiking and rock climbing, perfect for those looking to take their outdoor adventures to the next level. This course is designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of scrambling, providing a solid foundation for safe and enjoyable experiences in the mountains.
In this session, you will learn the key elements of scrambling, beginning with an introduction to the basics, including how to plan your route and select the right scramble. We will cover scrambling grades, helping you understand what each level entails and how to choose the appropriate difficulty for your skill level.
You'll then dive into practical skills, starting with a masterclass on movement and footwork. This includes how to navigate challenging terrain, making the most of handholds and footholds, and maintaining your balance as you progress upwards. Route reading and navigation are crucial aspects, and our instructors will provide guidance on how to read the terrain and make informed decisions during your scramble.
We offer this course in two amazing locations: the Peak District and Snowdonia. The Peak District is ideal for those wanting to focus on the technical aspects of scrambling at a lower elevation, with the course lasting one day.

Scrambling is an activity that blends elements of hiking and rock climbing. It involves using your hands and feet to navigate steep, rocky terrain, usually without the need for ropes or technical climbing gear.
Unlike hiking, which typically follows established trails, scrambling often requires route-finding and the ability to tackle rough, uneven surfaces. While it shares some similarities with rock climbing, scrambling is generally less technical and doesn't usually involve vertical climbs.
A moderate level of fitness is required for this course. You should be comfortable with walking for several hours on uneven terrain and have a good balance. Since scrambling involves using both your hands and feet, upper body strength is beneficial but not essential.
The course is designed to accommodate beginners, so you do not need prior scrambling experience, but a basic level of endurance and comfort with heights will make the experience more enjoyable.
It's important to wear appropriate clothing for scrambling, including:
You'll need to bring a few essentials to ensure you're prepared for a day of scrambling:
Scrambling is a weather-dependent activity, and safety is our top priority. If the weather conditions are unsuitable (e.g., heavy rain, strong winds, or thunderstorms), we may need to reschedule the course or adjust the plan for the day.
We monitor weather forecasts closely and will keep you informed of any changes. If the course is postponed due to weather, we will work with you to find a suitable alternative date.
We maintain a small group size with a maximum ratio of 1 instructor to 6 participants.
This ensures personalised instruction and allows the instructor to give each participant the attention they need to develop their skills and confidence.
Safety is a top priority during our scrambling courses. While scrambling does involve navigating challenging terrain, our experienced instructors will guide you through the process, teaching you how to assess routes, manage risks, and move safely.
The course also includes safety equipment, such as helmets, and first aid kits. By following our guidance, you can enjoy scrambling in a controlled and safe manner.
