Step beyond the climbing wall and experience bouldering on real rock. This outdoor workshop introduces the techniques, equipment, and safety practices you need to enjoy bouldering independently in the UK. You’ll spend the session outdoors with a qualified coach, learning how to read boulders, use mats effectively, and climb responsibly in natural settings.
Your workshop begins with a short introduction to outdoor bouldering and the site you’ll be climbing at. After a safety briefing, your coach will demonstrate how to set up crash pads and position them effectively. You’ll then work through exercises on spotting, falling safely, and reading boulder problems, with plenty of opportunity to practise each skill under supervision.
Once everyone is comfortable with the fundamentals, you’ll move on to tackling short, achievable boulders suited to your ability level. Expect guidance on technique, movement, and problem-solving, helping you transition smoothly from indoor to outdoor climbing. You’ll also discuss how to read guidebooks, assess rock conditions, and make responsible decisions about where and when to climb.
The session ends with a group debrief, where your instructor will review what you’ve learned and suggest ways to keep building your outdoor experience. You’ll leave with a strong understanding of how to stay safe, respect the environment, and make the most of every outdoor climbing opportunity.
Workshops take place at Sally in the Woods, a well-known woodland bouldering spot just outside Bathampton. This location offers an excellent mix of rock types and grades, making it ideal for learning key techniques in a peaceful natural setting.
The site is surrounded by ancient woodland, providing a sheltered space to climb with a variety of challenges to suit all ability levels. Easy access from Bath and Bristol means you can enjoy a half-day of outdoor learning without travelling far.
Suitable for adults aged 18 and over, this course is designed for anyone who has bouldered indoors and wants to transfer their skills outdoors. No prior outdoor experience is required—just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
You should be comfortable with basic indoor bouldering techniques such as warming up, problem reading, and topping out. Your instructor will adapt the session to your level, ensuring it’s both fun and confidence-building.
Instructors bring years of outdoor climbing experience and are skilled at introducing climbers to natural rock in a safe, structured way. Their approach focuses on building confidence through practical learning, ensuring you develop both competence and awareness.
The team’s small group ratios mean you’ll receive plenty of individual feedback and have time to practise each skill thoroughly. Every workshop is designed to help you enjoy the freedom of outdoor climbing while respecting the environment and local access agreements.
You’ll cover everything needed to start outdoor bouldering safely and responsibly. This includes how to position mats, fall correctly, spot others, and interpret guidebooks. You’ll also learn about crag etiquette and environmental care to help protect the areas you visit.
By the end, you’ll be able to identify safe climbs, assess conditions, and enjoy outdoor bouldering without needing constant supervision.
Not at all. The workshop is designed for those who already boulder indoors but are new to climbing outdoors. Your instructor will tailor the difficulty of climbs and challenges to suit your experience level.
If you’re unsure about your ability, your coach will guide you through techniques that build confidence and ensure you progress safely.
All safety and bouldering mats are provided. You’ll learn how to use them properly for different types of problems and landings.
It’s recommended that you bring your own climbing shoes and chalk bag if you have them, though these can often be borrowed if needed.
When done correctly, outdoor bouldering is a safe and rewarding activity. You’ll be taught how to manage risk through proper mat placement, spotting, and route choice.
Safety is a constant focus throughout the session, and your coach will be on hand to guide you through each step until you feel confident handling it independently.
Climbing on real rock introduces variables such as texture, weather, and terrain. You’ll learn how to adapt your movement and approach to deal with these changes.
The experience is more dynamic and requires greater awareness of your surroundings, which is what makes it so enjoyable once you’ve learned the basics.
Comfortable outdoor clothing, suitable footwear, and water are essential. Layers and waterproofs are recommended, as conditions can change quickly outdoors.
Your coach will provide all safety equipment and a short kit list before the day to help you prepare properly.
