Test your nerve and balance with our high and low ropes adventure in the historic woodland grounds of Ripley Castle, Harrogate. Whether you’re building confidence, working as a team, or seeking new challenges, this session offers something for everyone.
The experience begins with a welcome and safety briefing from your dedicated instructor, who will remain with your group throughout the session. Once kitted out with harnesses and helmets, you’ll be guided step by step as you explore the ropes course in the woodland setting of Ripley Castle.
Activities vary depending on your group but may include the 35ft Leap of Faith, Jacob’s Ladder, High Beam, and the Crates Stack. Each challenge requires teamwork, communication, and focus, making the course a great mix of individual achievement and group support. With the “challenge by choice” approach, no one is pressured into taking part in sections they aren’t comfortable with, so everyone can progress at their own pace.
By the end of the session, you’ll have pushed boundaries, celebrated achievements, and enjoyed the thrill of taking on the ropes in a private, instructor-led environment. It’s a rewarding activity for families, schools, and corporate groups alike.

The estate offers a beautiful mix of historic architecture and natural woodland, providing a unique setting for outdoor activities. The peaceful yet exciting environment makes it easy to focus on the challenges while enjoying the surroundings.
Easily accessible from Harrogate, Ripon, and surrounding areas, the location combines convenience with a sense of being away from the busy day-to-day. On-site facilities include free parking and a reception area, making your visit straightforward from start to finish.
All participants must be aged 8 or above and reasonably comfortable with light physical activity. No previous climbing or ropes experience is necessary, as full instruction will be given.
The course is adaptable to different confidence levels, so whether you’re enthusiastic about heights or more cautious, your instructor will tailor the challenges to suit you.
Since opening in 2012, this centre has welcomed thousands of groups for outdoor activities and continues to be one of Yorkshire’s most trusted providers. The ropes course reflects their long-standing dedication to both adventure and safety.
Sessions are always private, ensuring your group gets focused attention and a personalised experience. Instructors are passionate about making every visit safe, fun, and memorable, with a clear emphasis on encouragement and achievement.
Yes, free parking is available at Ripley Castle for all visitors. When you arrive, it’s important to register your vehicle to ensure that parking is properly recorded. This can easily be done on the iPad located at reception, which helps the centre manage spaces efficiently and keeps everything organised for your visit.
The parking area is conveniently located close to the main facilities, making it straightforward to access your activity without a long walk. Even during busier periods, there is usually sufficient space for cars, so you shouldn’t need to worry about finding a spot. It is recommended to allow a few extra minutes when arriving to register your vehicle and make your way to the activity area.
Spectators are welcome at Ripley Castle and can enjoy watching the activities while relaxing with a coffee or finding a comfortable spot nearby. This makes it easy for friends and family to be part of the experience without needing to participate directly. It’s a great way to keep everyone included, whether you are taking on a challenging adventure or a more leisurely activity.
However, please note that some areas, such as the lake, are a considerable distance from Basecamp and are not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs. It’s important for spectators to plan accordingly if they wish to follow along closely. While everyone is welcome, the terrain and activity locations may limit how much of the action can be observed from certain spots.
Basic changing facilities are provided for visitors who need privacy before or after their activity. These spaces are simple but functional, allowing you to change comfortably without disturbing other guests. They are designed to meet essential needs rather than offer extensive amenities.
For convenience, it is generally recommended to arrive dressed and ready for your activity. This reduces the need to rely on the changing areas and allows you to start your adventure promptly. Preparing in advance also helps minimise delays and ensures you can make the most of your time at the centre.
Dogs are welcome at Ripley Castle, as we encourage adventurers to share their experiences with their furry friends. Having your dog along can make your outdoor visit more enjoyable and adds an extra layer of companionship to your day. For safety and comfort, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, and owners should ensure their pets are well-behaved and friendly towards other visitors and animals.
Please be aware that some areas, including the lake, Disc Golf, Cryptic Chase, and Archery, do not allow dogs. These restrictions are in place to maintain safety for both your pet and other participants. Planning ahead will help you make the most of your visit while ensuring your dog remains safe, happy, and part of the experience wherever permitted.
There are several elements available, ranging from balance-based obstacles close to the ground to adrenaline-pumping challenges at height. Activities might include Jacob’s Ladder, Crate Stack, Leap of Faith, High Beam, and other balance or problem-solving sections designed for teamwork and fun.
The instructor will select the most suitable mix for your group, taking into account age, group size, and confidence levels. This way, you get a tailored experience that keeps everyone engaged without overwhelming anyone.
Comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement is best, such as sportswear or light outdoor gear. Trainers or shoes with a good grip are essential, as you’ll be climbing, balancing, and moving on ropes and beams. Loose jewellery or clothing that might catch should be avoided.
It’s also wise to dress according to the weather, as the course is outdoors in woodland. In colder months, bring layers and gloves, while in warmer months, breathable fabrics will keep you comfortable.
Most sessions go ahead in typical British weather, including light rain. The woodland cover often provides some shelter, and activities can be adapted to keep you safe and comfortable.
However, in extreme weather conditions such as very strong winds or thunderstorms, the activity will be postponed and rescheduled for another time. Safety is always prioritised.
Yes, the activities are based on a “challenge by choice” policy, meaning you only go as far as you feel comfortable. If you prefer to stay lower to the ground, the instructor can guide you towards the low ropes elements that still offer fun and teamwork without the same level of height.
For those who want to push themselves, the instructor provides encouragement and guidance, but no one is ever forced to complete a task. Many people find it a great way to gently overcome their fears in a supportive setting.
No prior experience is required. All equipment and instruction are provided, and the course is designed to be accessible to beginners while still offering a challenge to those who are more confident.
The instructor will explain each activity, demonstrate techniques, and provide tips to help you make the most of the experience. You’ll be guided step by step, so you can take part regardless of your background.
Every participant is fitted with a helmet and harness, and instructors check the equipment carefully before use. Safety lines and ropes are used for high elements, with instructors always present to supervise.
All instructors are qualified and trained in rope course management and first aid, so you can be assured you’re in safe hands from start to finish.
