Yorkshire is home to some of the UK’s most iconic climbing crags, and this outdoor rock climbing experience gives you the chance to explore them with expert guidance. Whether you’re new to climbing or already have experience, you’ll find routes that challenge and inspire in equal measure. With breathtaking gritstone formations and knowledgeable instructors, it’s an opportunity to enjoy climbing in a natural setting.
Sessions begin with a full introduction to equipment and safety, ensuring you feel comfortable before tackling the rock. You’ll learn or refresh key climbing techniques as you get used to the feel of climbing outdoors, supported by your instructor at every step. Beginners often start on smaller routes, while more experienced climbers can test themselves on longer climbs.
Once everyone is ready, the session moves on to climbing real gritstone walls and formations, where you’ll practise different styles of climbing. Depending on the location, you may also have the option to try abseiling, bouldering, or even weasling through natural rock features. Routes are carefully chosen to match your ability and provide the right mix of challenge and enjoyment.
Open sessions are designed to be social and inclusive, perfect for individuals, friends, and families. They run on weekends throughout the year, with the option to choose between fun-focused or progressive sessions. Private coaching can also be arranged—simply contact us via the adventuro chat or use the 'can’t find dates or have a large group?' button above the booking form.

Almscliffe Crag offers a different experience with its distinctive coarse gritstone, divided into Low Man and High Man sections for varied routes. Ilkley’s Cow & Calf combines natural and quarried gritstone, creating a wide range of climbs alongside spectacular views of the moors and valleys. Each venue provides unique challenges and scenery, giving you a taste of Yorkshire’s rich climbing heritage.

The best clothing for outdoor climbing is flexible and comfortable, similar to what you’d wear for a workout. Sportswear such as joggers, leggings, or shorts with a t-shirt works well. A light jacket is also useful, as conditions can change quickly outside.
Footwear is equally important. Climbing shoes are provided as part of the session, but if you have your own pair you’re welcome to bring them. Closed-toe trainers are helpful for walking between climbing areas.

Climbing outdoors is dependent on weather conditions, as rain or high winds can make routes unsafe. If the forecast looks unsuitable, you’ll be contacted in advance to rearrange.
The safety of the group is always the priority, so sessions will only run when conditions allow. Instructors aim to reschedule promptly so you don’t miss out on the experience.
Climbing outdoors can be adapted for a wide range of fitness levels. If you can manage light physical activity such as walking or gentle exercise, you’ll be able to take part.

Fun sessions are aimed at those who want a relaxed introduction to outdoor climbing, perfect for families, groups of friends, or first-time climbers. The focus is on enjoyment, variety, and building confidence.
Progressive sessions, on the other hand, are better suited to those who already have some climbing experience. These focus more on improving your skills, building independence, and challenging yourself on harder routes.
All essential gear is included, such as harnesses, helmets, and climbing shoes. You only need to bring comfortable clothing and a bottle of water.
If you own climbing shoes or a harness that you prefer to use, you can bring them along. Instructors will check to make sure they are safe before use.
