Ellessee
Absolutely amazing from start to finish. We laughed the whole way through, learning lots about the sport and the history of the castle. Couldn’t recommend enough!

Glide across scenic Yorkshire waterways and experience a different perspective of the outdoors. Whether you’re paddling on the lake at Ripley Castle or heading downstream towards York, these sessions balance fun, skill-building, and plenty of time to enjoy your surroundings. Canoes and kayaks are both available, making this a flexible adventure for friends, families, and groups.
A 3-hour session at Ripley Castle Lake is the perfect introduction, giving you the chance to paddle in pairs or small groups while soaking up the scenery. Once everyone is comfortable, light-hearted challenges and games are introduced, bringing plenty of laughs and an opportunity to practise your technique. It’s a great choice for families and groups looking for a relaxed but active day out.
For something longer, the Ripon to Boroughbridge trip takes you on a 7-mile paddle lasting 5–6 hours. Along the way, you’ll enjoy the sights and sounds of the River Ure, stopping for a scenic lunch break before continuing downstream. There’s a good chance of spotting local wildlife, including herons, kingfishers, or even otters if you’re lucky.
If you’re after a real adventure, the two-day paddle from Boroughbridge to York adds an overnight element with riverside camping. Day one is all about covering the distance at an easy pace, with meals shared by the water’s edge, while day two brings you into the city of York for a celebratory finish. This option is perfect for small groups seeking both nature and a sense of achievement.
Sessions at Ripley Castle Lake offer a peaceful setting within the castle grounds, with calm waters that are perfect for beginners. The lake is surrounded by historic views, woodland trails, and open green spaces, making it a lovely spot to relax before or after your paddle.
Longer canoe and kayak trips explore the wider beauty of Yorkshire. The River Ure provides a scenic route through North Yorkshire, linking towns like Ripon, Boroughbridge, and York. With its mix of countryside views, wildlife encounters, and historic landmarks, it’s a fantastic way to experience the region from the water.
You don’t need prior experience to take part in any of the sessions. Instructors will introduce you to the basics, from handling the paddle to working as a team in the boat. Buoyancy aids and helmets are always provided for your safety.
All participants should be confident in water and able to manage being outdoors for the duration of the activity. A change of clothes and suitable footwear are recommended, as getting wet is very likely during games and group challenges.
The centre was founded in 2012 when two climbing friends turned a shared passion for the outdoors into a community-focused business. Their goal has always been to make adventure accessible, with activities that are fun, inclusive, and memorable.
With years of experience leading groups on both land and water, the team is committed to creating days out that combine skill-building with enjoyment. Whether you want a quick taster session or a multi-day challenge, you’ll be supported by friendly instructors who know the area inside out.
