Paddle along Newquay’s historic coastline while uncovering centuries of seafaring tales and coastal legends. The Heritage Super SUP Tour combines gentle paddling with engaging storytelling, making it ideal for history lovers, school groups, or anyone curious about Newquay’s maritime past. No prior experience is required, and all essential equipment is included.
From our heated changing rooms, you’ll be kitted out with a top-of-the-range wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet and paddle. Your group will follow an instructor down a scenic rock path to one of Newquay’s semi-secret coves, where the Super SUP will be waiting. Take in the coastal scenery and spot local wildlife on your walk down to the water.
Once on the water, you’ll learn key SUP skills including launching, landing, balancing, paddling, and directional changes. Beginners often start kneeling, with guidance from our coaches helping you progress to standing. Along the way, you’ll explore secluded caves, hidden coves, and areas steeped in history, including tales of pirates, smugglers, and heroic RNLI rescues.
The tour is designed to combine learning, exercise, and fun. You’ll pause to play paddleboarding games such as King of the SUP and Dizzy Stick, helping you improve balance and coordination while enjoying the playful challenge. Instructors will also share insights into the local maritime history and coastal heritage.
Launching from Towan Beach, the route takes you along Newquay’s scenic cliffs and craggy coastline. The area is rich in marine and birdlife, with opportunities to spot seals, seabirds, and other native species.
Key locations include semi-secret coves used by historic smugglers, sites of the former pilchard industry, and viewpoints over the Cribbar reef. These sheltered waters provide safe and enjoyable conditions for paddling while exploring Cornwall’s coastal history.
No prior experience is needed, and the activity is suitable for all levels. Participants should feel comfortable in the water and follow instructor guidance at all times.
Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. All participants will be provided with appropriate safety equipment to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience.
The centre near Towan Beach provides a safe and welcoming environment with heated changing rooms, hot showers, secure storage, and access to hire equipment.
Instructors are trained in both SUP techniques and local maritime history, ensuring a guided experience that is engaging, educational, and safe. Backup plans for adverse weather mean your Heritage Super SUP Tour can continue in most conditions, offering a reliable and memorable adventure.
Super SUP (Super Stand Up Paddleboarding) in Newquay is riding the wave of popularity as one of the UK’s freshest and rapidly expanding water sports, and it’s proudly part of our thrilling activity lineup at our centre!
We’ve introduced a fleet of grand, inflatable paddleboards that can accommodate groups of up to 8, creating a unique way to explore Newquay’s storied coastline. Setting off from the Gazzle on Fistral Headland, you’ll navigate your craft into hidden smugglers’ caves, traverse natural rapids, and circle around whirlpools, all while mastering the balance and steering of the vessel.
This engaging activity is a hit with participants of all ages and fitness levels, serving not only as an exciting adventure but also as an excellent diving platform and observation deck for peering at the aquatic life beneath the waves.
After getting kitted up at our centre, you and your group will launch the craft from the safety of Towan Beach and navigate it along our craggy coastline, into deep smugglers caves and through the natural whirlpools. The area is steeped in history and heritage.
Having learnt core paddle strokes and skills, you’ll moor up for a variety of hilarious games including SUMO SUP, King of the SUP or Mega SUP races, before navigating ocean swells.
The Gazzle’s caves and craggy coastline are home to an abundance of wildlife, from our native seals that call the coves home to jellyfish under the water’s surface. During your SUP experience, you’ll learn how to identify the flora and fauna of Newquay’s coastal ecosystems and witness them up close from the SUP itself.
All our Instructors are fully qualified Beach and Surf Safety Lifeguards, ISA awarded surf instructors and experienced coasteer leaders. They’ve undertaken extensive First Aid training and we endeavour as an Activity Centre to regularly in-house train our staff so they have experience in all weather and water conditions. Every instructor must have years of personal experience in the water and we also work in close partnership with the RNLI to ensure your safety in and out of the water.
SUP paddling requires a basic level of fitness and it certainly gets the heart pumping, but you don’t have to be an athlete! The beauty is that you can rest if you need a break.
We ask that everybody who takes part in our SUP experiences can swim a minimum of 50 metres. However, you’ll be provided with a buoyancy aid at the start of your session, meaning you always have a floatation aid throughout your SUP experience.
Yes! During the winter you’ll be provided with some extra kit to help keep you warm on colder days – a wetsuit hood, neoprene gloves & neoprene boots!
