Explore Malhamdale on a guided adventure through Janet Foss, Gordale Scar waterfall scramble, Malham Tarn lunch spots and a climb plus abseil on Malham Cove. Beginners welcome with reasonable hill fitness; ages 10 plus with a paying adult for under-18s on private group dates.
Your adventure begins with introductions and kit checks in Malham before journeying past Janet Foss, scrambling the waterfall rocks at Gordale Scar, and exploring open limestone country around Malham Tarn. Instructors provide hands-on coaching on foot placement, balance, and spotting so you feel secure over every rocky step.
During the afternoon, the session heads toward Malham Cove for coached climbing and abseiling above the iconic limestone pavement when conditions allow. The day wraps up with an easy scenic stroll back down the valley, leaving plenty of time to debrief and enjoy the wide-open Dales scenery.
Your day unfolds in Malhamdale limestone country, moving from ancient woodland waterfalls to the dramatic amphitheatre of Gordale Scar and the high plateau of Malham Tarn. Instructors know the best paths, hidden scrambles, and quiet resting spots across the National Park.
The magnificent curved amphitheatre of Malham Cove serves as the centrepiece for the climbing elements. We send comprehensive directions, parking advice in Malham village, and arrival guidance by email before your private date.
Designed for private groups with participants aged 10 and over and a paying adult for under-18s. Newcomers to scrambling are welcome if you have reasonable fitness for a full day on hill paths. Steady balance and enthusiasm matter more than climbing experience.
Please let us know about any relevant medical conditions, joint concerns, or height anxiety when booking. Under-10s are best suited to our dedicated family crag sessions on gentler gritstone outcrops.
We know Malhamdale intimately, so the day flows between waterfall scramble, tarn viewpoints and Cove ropework without feeling rushed. Coaching stays hands-on and family-friendly while keeping rope systems tight.
All coaches hold national governing body awards through Mountain Training, alongside outdoor first aid certification and enhanced DBS checks. You will be looked after by knowledgeable local leaders who love sharing the natural history and geology of the Yorkshire Dales.
Meet at Malham National Park car park, Malham, Skipton BD23 4DJ. Allow extra time for moorland or crag approaches from the car park.
We send final directions, parking details and arrival time before your session.
A full day on limestone paths and scrambles needs steady hill fitness, but we build in plenty of breaks at Janet Foss, Gordale and the Cove so you can catch your breath and enjoy the views.
Enthusiasm and a willingness to follow instructor guidance matter more than climbing grades; tell us if anyone in the group is nervous about heights so we can coach sensitively on exposed sections.
Your fee covers guided walking through Janet Foss, the Gordale Scar scramble, tarn viewpoints and coached climbing plus abseil at Malham Cove when conditions allow.
Harness, helmet and group safety kit for roped elements are included, along with clear briefings before each new section so everyone understands the plan.
Ages 10 plus with a paying adult on private group dates; beginners are welcome if you are up for a full day on the hill.
Share height confidence and any medical needs when you book so we can tune Cove activities and pacing to your group before you arrive in the dale.
Malham National Park car park is the usual start, with paid parking close to the village and clear signage once you arrive.
We email meet time, parking payment details and what to expect on the walk-in a few days before your session so you can plan the drive from Skipton or further afield.
Pack hill boots, waterproofs, lunch, snacks and plenty of water for a full day in the dale, plus spare layers even if the forecast looks kind.
Harness and helmet are provided for roped work at the Cove; grippy footwear matters on wet limestone near the waterfall.
Gordale Scar is a hands-on limestone scramble and the rock can be slick near the waterfall, so coaches choose lines that match your group and the conditions on the day.
You are never rushed; instructors coach footwork and handholds step by step, and there is always the option to skip a section if someone prefers a slightly easier way round.
Many groups finish in Malham village and treat themselves to a hot drink or meal after the instructed day, which is a lovely way to relive the highlights.
Return times depend on pace and weather, so plan your transport home with a little flexibility after a big day out.
Tutors brief you on gates, livestock and staying on marked paths in the National Park so the dale stays welcoming for farmers and walkers alike.
Dogs are not suitable on this mixed scramble and rope day; contact us if you need advice on a more pet-friendly product.
Popular dates mean extra care at abseil stations, and coaches manage queues, harness checks and clear calls so everyone stays safe while they wait their turn.
Very poor weather may limit roped work, but we still aim for a memorable hill adventure with scenery and scrambling that suit the forecast.
No prior climbing is required for the introductory rope sections at the Cove; coaches explain harnesses, calls and movement before anyone leaves the ground.
Indoor wall experience can help you relax on the abseil, but plenty of guests try outdoor climbing for the first time on this day and leave buzzing.
