Tarrafal de São Nicolau is the island's biggest town and its main port, set on a bay on the west coast of São Nicolau, over the hills from Ribeira Brava. Whaling ships once anchored here, and fishing still shapes the day, with boats working out of the harbour and a small fishing museum in town. The town beach is black sand, said by locals to ease aching joints. North of town, the coast road leads to villages such as Praia Branca and Ribeira da Prata, tucked into steep valleys below the mountains. The bay faces west, so evenings end with the sun dropping into the sea.
Rocks, beaches and valley walks
At Carbeirinho, a short drive away, the wind and waves have carved the coast into arches and fluted cliffs. One of the island's finest hikes climbs from Praia Branca through the Ribeira da Prata valley, then winds along the ridges to the fertile Fajã plain. Monte Gordo's summit sits on the boundary with Ribeira Brava, and its western slopes rise above these valleys. Closer to town, a path leads to Baixo Rocha, a quiet beach of pale sand.
