Using a Diver Propulsion Vehicle adds speed, efficiency, and excitement to your diving. This course teaches safe operation, handling techniques, and navigation using DPVs. You’ll gain the skills needed to incorporate a DPV into recreational or technical dives confidently, under the guidance of experienced instructors.
Training starts at the Gosforth centre, where instructors provide an overview of DPV function, handling, and safety considerations. You’ll learn pre-dive checks, correct body positioning, and how to adjust trim and buoyancy while being propelled underwater.
Confined water dives give hands-on practice, allowing you to master smooth operation, speed control, and safe turns. Open water dives at local sites such as Capernwray, Ellerton, or Beadnell Bay put these skills into practice in real diving conditions. Instructors provide ongoing feedback, focusing on safe navigation, coordination, and emergency management while using a DPV.
The Gosforth centre serves as the base for theory and briefing sessions. Confined water practice takes place at the indoor pool in Elsdon Avenue, Seaton Delaval, Whitley Bay. Open water training occurs at local sites chosen for accessibility and safety, allowing controlled DPV use in a variety of conditions.
These sites provide opportunities to practise vehicle handling, navigation, and emergency procedures in safe and supervised settings. Instructors ensure each participant gains confidence and skill in real diving environments.
Participants must have a recognized Open Water certification and basic experience with scuba equipment. Prior experience with buoyancy control, mask clearing, and regulator use is expected to allow focus on DPV-specific skills.
The course builds practical competence progressively. Instructors guide each diver step-by-step, ensuring both theory and practical skills are fully understood before advancing to open water DPV dives.
Instructors specialise in DPV techniques, combining safety, fun, and skill development in every session. Training is delivered in small groups, allowing detailed guidance and personalised feedback.
Our facilities provide access to both pool and open water environments, making it easier for divers to practise DPV operation safely. Emphasis on correct handling, emergency procedures, and dive planning ensures divers leave with competence and confidence for independent use.
