Refresh and extend your instructor toolkit on full-day CPD workshops such as weaselling sessions and creative ropework problem solving. Courses suit Rock Climbing Instructor pathway staff and experienced coaches wanting MTA CPD points when membership applies.
Refresh, challenge, and extend your instructional repertoire on focused continuing professional development workshops for qualified climbing instructors and leaders. Your course tutor leads masterclasses in advanced rope rescue solutions, weaselling problem-solving, teaching movement biomechanics, or creative anchor rigging on complex crag terrain.
Sessions are highly interactive and collaborative, encouraging peer discussion and sharing real-world scenario experiences alongside tutor demonstrations. You will spend the day testing alternative coaching approaches, refining group control strategies, and troubleshooting unusual crag complications with fellow outdoor professionals.
Workshops make use of distinctive Yorkshire gritstone crags and caves, including Brimham Rocks, Almscliffe, or Slipstone Crags, chosen specifically for their rich variety of natural features, tunnels, and complex anchor setups. Some technical CPD modules may also utilise indoor climbing walls during inclement weather.
Exact venue location, parking arrangements, and arrival details are confirmed well before the workshop date. Instructors should bring full personal instructing kit, including helmets, harnesses, personal protective equipment, and any specialised coaching tools.
Open to holders of Mountain Training awards (such as CWI, RCI, Rock Skills Tutors) or registered candidates working toward their assessment. You should hold current membership with the Mountain Training Association or relevant outdoor governing body.
Please let us know your specific award level and areas of particular interest when registering. Come prepared to actively contribute ideas, test new techniques, and engage in constructive peer feedback throughout the day.
Instructor CPD days are led by experienced coaches who share rigging ideas you can use straight away on your next session.
Workshops are delivered by experienced Mountain Training course directors and technical advisors with active Mountain Training Association (MTA) accreditation. Attendance contributes approved CPD points toward your continuous MTA membership and leadership credentials.
Meet at Brimham Rocks car park, Brimham Rocks car park, North Yorkshire HG3 4DW. Allow extra time for moorland or crag approaches from the car park.
We send final directions, parking details and arrival time before your session.
Qualified climbing instructors, wall supervisors and coaches who want fresh ideas for weaselling, creative rigging and session delivery on Yorkshire rock. You should already hold or be close to Mountain Training awards such as Climbing Wall Instructor or Rock Climbing Instructor.
Days suit professionals aged 18 and over who enjoy peer discussion and testing techniques in realistic crag scenarios. Tell us your award level when you book so tutors pitch workshops at the right depth.
Your fee covers a full day of facilitated CPD with a specialist tutor, shared ropes and teaching hardware for workshop elements, and structured time to practise rigging and coaching drills with fellow instructors.
Travel, meals, parking charges and your personal instructor PPE are not included. You should arrive with the helmet, harness and rigging kit you normally carry at work.
Workshops typically use distinctive Yorkshire grit venues such as Brimham Rocks, Almscliffe or Slipstone, chosen for tunnels, weasels and complex anchor setups that spark teaching ideas.
Exact car park, grid reference and arrival time are confirmed by email before your date. Some modules may move to an indoor wall if forecasts make exposed crag work unsafe.
Pack full outdoor clothing, lunch and plenty of water for a long day on the moor. Bring your usual instructor helmet, harness, cowstails and any personal rigging tools you like to work with.
A notebook or phone camera helps capture anchor sketches and peer ideas you want to try back at your centre. Label personal hardware if you lend kit during paired exercises.
You should hold a relevant Mountain Training qualification or be an experienced coach working toward assessment. The day assumes you already understand basic rope systems and group management.
If you are unsure whether your background fits, email us with your logbook summary before booking. We can suggest an alternative CPD theme or a more foundational course if needed.
Groups are usually eight to ten instructors so everyone gets hands-on time with rigging problems and coaching feedback. Smaller numbers still run with the same interactive format.
Popular spring and autumn dates fill quickly, so book early or enquire about a dedicated date if your centre wants several staff on the same workshop.
Light wind or drizzle may simply change which faces we use at Brimham or similar venues. Persistent storms, lightning or high winds mean we relocate to sheltered rigging bays or an agreed indoor wall.
We aim to email you the evening before when a significant venue change is likely, so you are not surprised on arrival. Safety always overrides sticking to an exposed crag plan.
Eligible Mountain Training Association members can usually claim one CPD point per full day when attendance and membership rules are met. Keep your own MTA records up to date after the workshop.
We provide attendance confirmation if your membership audit needs it. Points are not automatic for non-members or for partial attendance, so plan to stay for the full published hours.
Yes. Centres often block-book a date so wall teams share rigging ideas and common language before the busy season. Tell us how many staff you hope to send and any topics you want emphasised.
We can quote for a private CPD day if your team needs a bespoke focus such as rescue refresher or youth coaching at height. Lead time of several weeks helps secure tutor cover.
Shared ropes, slings, cordelette and teaching anchors are provided for structured workshop tasks unless the course description states otherwise. Tutors bring scenario props suited to weaselling and problem-solving modules.
You still need your own helmet, harness and personal PPE as for any instructing day. Borrowing centre kit on the day is not guaranteed, so arrive self-sufficient.
