Looking for a laid-back way to get out on the water while exploring Skye? Canoeing is a great option, especially if you’re travelling with family or a mix of abilities. You’ll paddle together, work as a team, and enjoy a slower pace as you take in the surroundings.
Getting started is straightforward, with your guide showing you how to handle the canoe, paddle efficiently, and work together as a team. You’ll be in groups of up to three per canoe, which makes things feel stable and sociable right from the beginning. You might even attach canoes together to form a raft, adding a fun and cooperative element to the session.
Once you’re on the water, you’ll head out at a steady pace, exploring either sheltered coastal areas or calm freshwater lochs depending on the day. The focus is on keeping things relaxed, with time to practise your paddling, take in the scenery, and enjoy being out on the water. There’s plenty of flexibility throughout, so whether you want to drift along or get a bit more involved with technique, the session can adapt as you go.
Sessions are run from Whitewave in Linicro, just outside Portree, giving easy access to a range of sheltered paddling spots across the north of Skye. This makes it a great base whether you’re heading out onto the coast or exploring one of the nearby lochs.
The exact meeting point will be confirmed a day or two before your session, depending on conditions, but it will be somewhere around the Trotternish peninsula. Roads on Skye can be busy, particularly during peak times, so allowing extra time for travel is always a good idea.
No previous experience is needed, and canoeing is one of the most accessible ways to get out on the water. It’s ideal if you’re looking for something relaxed, with plenty of stability and support along the way.
You should be comfortable being near water and able to follow simple instructions. For full day sessions, a basic level of fitness will help, as you’ll be paddling for longer periods with breaks built in.
Drawing on decades of outdoor experience, the team continues a strong connection to Scotland’s landscape.
Cam and Izzy bring experience from across the Highlands and beyond, including time spent working internationally. Their sessions are shaped to feel welcoming and easy going, helping you build confidence while making the most of your time on the water.
No experience is required. You’ll be shown everything you need to know before heading out, including how to paddle and steer.
As you settle in, you’ll quickly get used to working together in the canoe. The session is designed to feel relaxed, so you can build confidence without feeling rushed.
Each canoe can take up to three people, making it a great option for families or small groups. Sharing a canoe also makes paddling feel more manageable.
You’ll work together to move and steer, which adds a fun, team-based element to the experience. It’s as much about coordination as it is about paddling.
Yes, private sessions are available and can be booked by getting in touch directly. This gives you more flexibility to shape the session around your group.
It’s a great option if you want a more personalised experience, whether that’s focusing on skills or simply enjoying time together on the water at your own pace.
You’ll want to bring suitable layers for being outdoors, along with something to wear underneath your kit if you choose to use a wetsuit. Avoid cotton or denim, as they are uncomfortable if wet.
Footwear that you don’t mind getting wet is important, along with a towel and spare clothes for afterwards.
Canoeing is generally considered a drier activity compared to kayaking, especially in calm conditions. However, there’s always a chance of splashes or getting a bit wet along the way.
Wetsuits are available if you’d prefer to have one, but they’re not necessary. It’s best to come prepared with dry clothes for after just in case.
You’ll meet around Whitewave in Linicro, near Portree, but the exact location will be confirmed a day or two before your session. This helps ensure you’re heading to the best spot for the conditions.
Travel times can be longer than expected on Skye, so leaving extra time is recommended.
Canoeing is generally quite relaxed and doesn’t require a high level of fitness. Sharing the paddling between two or three people makes it easier to manage. You can take things at your own pace and still enjoy the experience.
Yes, family sessions are suitable for children as young as 3. Canoes are stable and well-suited to younger paddlers when accompanied by adults.
The session is adapted to keep things fun and manageable, with plenty of support along the way. It’s a good way to introduce children to being on the water.
