A 3-hour bike tour starting near Central Station invites you to discover Amsterdam’s hidden side through culture, creativity, and unexpected activities. Ride a traditional Dutch bike with a local guide as you try magnet fishing in the canals, cycle through lively neighbourhoods like Prinseneiland and Jordaan, and enjoy a short graffiti workshop in the vibrant Amsterdam North. This tour uncovers urban gems and stories that most visitors don’t see.
Starting from Central Station, you’ll be fitted with a traditional Dutch bike, the ideal way to experience the city as locals do. The ride takes you west to Prinseneiland and Jordaan, historic areas that have undergone significant change with a growing creative community. Along the canals here, you will take part in magnet fishing, using strong magnets to pull objects from the water, connecting you with Amsterdam’s canal history in a hands-on way.
Then the group boards a short ferry crossing the IJ River to Amsterdam North, a former shipyard area transformed into a creative hotspot. This part of the tour features impressive industrial sites such as cranes, slipways, and vast sheds alongside colourful street art. As part of the experience, you’ll join a brief graffiti workshop, creating your own artwork in an open, artistic environment. Throughout the tour, your guide shares personal stories, observations, and insights into Amsterdam’s culture and history, making the ride engaging and informative.
The meeting point at Central Station is highly accessible by all main public transport routes across Amsterdam, making it easy to join from any part of the city or beyond. Amsterdam’s city centre is renowned for its network of canals, historic drawbridges, and charming architecture, which form a picturesque backdrop for the beginning of the tour. From here, the route heads west to the 17th Century harbour district and the Jordaan neighbourhood, areas with vibrant streets and a creative, evolving culture.
Crossing the IJ River by ferry brings you to Amsterdam North, an area with a rich industrial heritage now revitalised into an arts district. The landscape here is defined by old shipyards, cranes, and warehouses alongside impressive street art and graffiti, providing a stark contrast to the city’s historic centre. This mix of industrial history and contemporary creativity creates a varied and exciting cycling environment.
A good level of fitness and solid cycling skills are required to comfortably complete the 11-kilometre route within the three-hour timeframe. Participants must be confident riding in an urban setting, navigating city streets and traffic safely. Appropriate clothing should be worn according to the weather, with rain gear supplied if needed. Helmets are optional but available on request. Bringing a backpack is advised if you plan to carry snacks or personal belongings during the tour.
With over 20 years of experience, the team boasts expert knowledge of Amsterdam’s streets and culture, offering guests an authentic local perspective. The guides are friendly, professional, and dedicated to ensuring guests feel safe and well cared for throughout the tour. Smaller group sizes promote a more personal connection with the guide and a more enjoyable experience overall.
Their approach combines traditional Dutch cycling with unique activities such as magnet fishing and graffiti art workshops, giving guests a distinctive and varied insight into the city. The bikes provided are typical Dutch models, adding to the authentic feel. Safety is always a priority, allowing guests to focus on enjoying the cultural and historical aspects of Amsterdam without worry.
We recommend bringing a small backpack for comfort on our Dutch city bikes. These bikes are easiest to handle without shoulder bags or handbags. Inside your backpack, pack a waterproof jacket and sunscreen – Amsterdam’s weather can change quickly and unexpectedly. A water bottle is useful for staying hydrated and if you’re joining a longer ride, it’s a good idea to bring some snacks or lunch.
While we don’t stop for lunch during the tours, you’re welcome to bring food and enjoy it during one of our drink or rest stops. Our guides are always happy to see guests come prepared – especially if you’re generous with the snacks!
Bike tours in Amsterdam go ahead in nearly all weather conditions – rain or shine. Cycling is part of everyday life in the Netherlands, regardless of the forecast, and we embrace that spirit. If it rains, we provide simple rain ponchos to keep you dry during the ride. However, if you have your own rain gear that fits well and keeps you warm, we suggest bringing it along.
The only time we cancel a tour is when there's an official severe weather warning, or when winter conditions like heavy snow or ice make the roads genuinely unsafe for cycling. This happens very rarely. If a tour does need to be cancelled due to weather, we’ll contact you as soon as possible and offer alternatives or a refund.
All our tours use classic Dutch unisex city bikes, chosen for comfort and ease of use. Each bike comes with hand brakes and at least 3 gears to help with any gentle inclines around the city. We have a variety of frame sizes available, so there’s something to suit most adult heights.
Before the tour starts, we’ll help you adjust the saddle to the correct height and make sure you’re comfortable. If you need assistance, just ask – our guides are happy to help get everything set up properly.
Yes, we do have smaller bikes available for shorter adults or teenagers. We also provide children’s bikes for kids who can confidently ride on their own. Please note that for our public tours, the minimum age is 12 years old. This is for safety reasons, as children under 12 often need more supervision and may not yet have the awareness needed to safely navigate Amsterdam’s city cycling.
If you’re travelling with younger children, we recommend booking a private tour. That way, we can tailor the route and pace to your group and offer options like cargo bikes or bikes with child seats for your younger family members.
Babies and toddlers are not allowed on our public tours due to the pace and safety requirements. However, on private tours, we can accommodate younger children with specially equipped bikes. We can provide bikes with front or rear child seats, or a Dutch-style cargo bike where little ones can ride comfortably and safely.
For health and safety, we follow local guidelines which recommend that babies should be at least 18 months old and able to sit independently before joining a bike tour. Please let us know in advance so we can have the right equipment ready for your group.
Helmets are not mandatory for cyclists in Amsterdam, and most locals don’t use them. That said, we fully support anyone who prefers to wear one for extra peace of mind. We have helmets in a range of sizes available – just let us know if you’d like one before the tour begins.
You are welcome to join the tour using your own bike if you prefer. Just be aware that our guides are only trained and equipped to handle repairs and issues with our rental bikes. If your own bike has a mechanical issue during the tour, we might not be able to assist and may have to continue the tour without you.
So if you’re confident in the condition of your bike and are comfortable taking full responsibility for it, feel free to bring it along. Otherwise, we suggest using one of our well-maintained city bikes for ease and peace of mind.
We always aim to return at the scheduled time, but we recommend allowing for a little flexibility. Due to occasional delays from traffic, route changes or unexpected stops, tours can sometimes run up to 30 minutes longer than planned.
If you have a strict schedule afterwards, we suggest not booking anything too close to the expected end time, just in case the ride goes a little over.
Our scheduled bike tours run with a minimum of 4 participants. If you’ve pre-booked online, your spot is secure – and we’ll only cancel if the tour doesn’t meet the minimum or if conditions are unsafe. In either case, we’ll always reach out to offer rescheduling or a full refund.
Tipping is not expected in the Netherlands, but it is appreciated. Our guides work hard to deliver a great experience and love what they do – a tip is a lovely way to show your appreciation if you feel they’ve gone above and beyond.
If you’re wondering how much to tip, around 15% of the tour price is a generous gesture, or approximately €50 for a half-day private tour. That said, any amount is welcome, and you're under no obligation. Your guide’s goal is to make your experience fun, informative, and memorable – with or without a tip.
