Advance your sailing abilities with focused on-water practice designed to increase confidence and independence. Over two days, you’ll build on Level 1 skills, practising boat control, steering and sail trim while learning to manage light wind conditions safely. Hands-on guidance ensures you develop understanding, competence, and confidence afloat.
Sessions start with briefings covering safety, advanced sailing techniques, and capsize recovery procedures. You’ll be guided through controlled exercises that consolidate previous skills while introducing new challenges, including sailing independently in light wind conditions.
Once afloat, you will practise manoeuvres such as tacking, gybing, and sail adjustment, with instructors observing and offering feedback. Capsize recovery is conducted in a controlled manner, one boat at a time, giving you the confidence to handle unexpected situations safely.
Later in each session, sailors combine skills to sail short courses, applying knowledge of wind, sail trim, and boat handling. Continuous coaching ensures you gain practical experience while building independence and resilience on the water.
Sessions are held on a sheltered inland reservoir near Forest Row in East Sussex. Calm water and clearly defined launch areas allow for safe skill development while providing space for independent sailing exercises.
The natural setting supports focus and confidence, while designated areas for on-shore observation allow family or friends to watch without interfering with instruction.
Participants should have completed RYA Level 1 or demonstrate equivalent sailing experience. Comfort on the water, ability to handle a boat independently, and familiarity with basic manoeuvres are essential to benefit fully from the course.
Wear clothing suitable for getting wet, along with secure footwear. Arriving early allows time for rigging and briefing to ensure maximum on-water practice.
Experienced instructors provide structured coaching that balances guidance with opportunities for independent sailing. Sessions are designed to challenge and develop skills while ensuring safety and confidence are maintained.
Attention to group size, session planning, and clear water zones ensures each sailor receives personalised coaching. By combining structured practice with extended on-water time, participants gain the skills and assurance needed to progress to Level 3 or Start Racing.
