The Rongai route climbs Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border, making it one of the quietest ways up the mountain. The ascent looks out over the plains towards Amboseli before joining the summit approach near Mawenzi, and the descent follows the well established Marangu route on the other side.
After a night in Arusha to meet your guide and check equipment, the trek begins near the village of Nale Moru and climbs steadily through farmland, pine forest and open moorland on the mountain's northern flank. The route swings towards Mawenzi before crossing the high saddle to Kibo Hut, ready for the summit push.
Following the climb to Uhuru Peak, the descent switches to the Marangu route, passing through Horombo before reaching Marangu Gate. A full day by day breakdown of camps, distances and walking times is set out below.
Climbs on the Rongai route begin and end in Arusha, with a drive out to the northern trailhead near Nale Moru taking you close to the Kenyan border before the walking starts. The lower slopes here are farmland and pine forest rather than the dense rainforest found on the southern routes, giving the early days a different character.
Because Rongai approaches from a less travelled side of the mountain, the early camps feel quieter than on the busier southern paths, with wide views out over the plains towards Amboseli. Arusha remains a comfortable base before and after the climb, with a good choice of hotels and restaurants nearby.
No technical climbing skill is required for this route, as it is a walking trail from Nale Moru to the summit, though a good level of cardiovascular fitness makes a real difference to how comfortable the longer days feel. Regular hill walking, running or similar training in the months before departure is the best preparation.
A pre trip medical check is a sensible precaution, particularly for anyone with a history of heart, lung or blood pressure conditions, since the altitude gained each day places real strain on the body. Guides monitor climbers daily and carry oxygen, but a slow, steady pace and honesty about how you are feeling matter most.
Guides on this route know the quieter northern approach well and use the gradual climb towards Mawenzi to help with steady acclimatisation before the summit attempt. Group sizes are kept manageable, and porters carry the bulk of camping equipment so climbers can focus on the walk itself.
Camps are set up with proper tents and hot food waiting at the end of each trekking day, and the option to hire a personal porter is available for anyone who wants extra support with a daypack. The team's experience running this specific route, camp by camp, is built from years on the mountain.
