This version of the Machame route builds in an additional night at Karanga Camp compared with the standard schedule, giving the body more time to settle at altitude before the push for the summit. The trail still climbs the south west side of Kilimanjaro through dense rainforest and open moorland, but the extra day eases the pace considerably.
After a night in Arusha to meet your guide and check equipment, the climb sets off from Machame Gate and moves steadily through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert, with camps at Machame, Shira, Barranco and Karanga before reaching Barafu at the base of the summit route. The added night at Karanga breaks up what is normally a longer single stage on the faster version of this route.
The final stretch brings an overnight summit push to Uhuru Peak followed by a two day descent through Mweka Gate. A full day by day breakdown of camps and trekking times is set out below.
Climbs on the Machame route begin and end in Arusha, with the trailhead a short drive away at Machame Gate on the mountain's southern flank. The lower slopes are covered in dense, often damp rainforest, giving way to heath, moorland and eventually barren alpine desert as the trail climbs higher.
As one of the most established routes on the mountain, camps along the way are well set up and the paths clearly marked, even where sections get muddy underfoot. Arusha remains a comfortable base before and after the climb, with a good choice of hotels and restaurants nearby.
No technical climbing ability is required, since this is a walking trail from Machame Gate to the summit, though a good level of fitness makes the trekking days noticeably more comfortable. Regular hill walking, running or similar training in the months before departure is the best preparation, and the extra day built into this itinerary gives a little more margin than the faster schedule.
A pre trip medical check is a sensible precaution, particularly for anyone with heart, lung or blood pressure conditions, since the altitude gained each day places real strain on the body. Guides monitor climbers daily and carry oxygen, but a steady pace and honesty about symptoms remain the best safeguards.
Guides on this route know the southern side of Kilimanjaro well and use the additional night at Karanga to give climbers the best possible chance of a comfortable summit attempt. Meals are planned around the physical demands of trekking, and porters carry the group's camping and cooking equipment throughout.
A personal porter can be hired separately for anyone who wants extra help with their own daypack, and the guiding team is well practised at running this slightly longer version of the route for groups of all sizes.
